What up G|A?'ers,

I currently have a HotWay Combo USB/Firewire HD external enclosure, but the firewire connection is rather flaky, as in once in a while, if you use the firewire connection, the comp won't recognize the drive.

Anyways, I really need a firewire connection because I'm running out of USB ports, so if anyone has any good combo enclosures to recommend, i'd love to hear 'em.

USB hub?

i also thought about getting a USB hub. if I can't find an enclosure then I will get a hub, although the hub solution is imo an unelegant one.

I disagree. While you may feel that a hub is inelegant, it's exactly the opposite. You can run the cable to a nearby desk and hook components up there, or set it up behind your PC and run them from out of sight.

Another option is a 5.25 bay multi-function cardreader.

USB hub?
:stupid: (Heh... there are some things we can agree on... :heh: )

Too much hassle with a new enclosure... and there are hubs that aren't so obtrusive.

Also, if you have an open PCI slot, you can buy a 5 - 6 port internal card that would just give you more USB ports out of the back of your PC.

I use one of these on my main PC and they're the bomb...

Overstock.com has them too for around $19.00

A guy I know who is a Karaoke disc jockey uses an external hard drive for his laptop at the shows where he performs. He totally prefers firewire over USB2 for his connections. He claims it's more reliable, especially for continuous transfer. And from what I have read and my small experience with USB hard drives, I have to agree with him. My next external enclosure will definitely be firewire.
