In Love With an Italian Man? Beware!

Here is fair warning to any woman who falls in love with an Italian man: Marry him and don't expect much help around the house, including taking care of the children.

That's the word from a new international study conducted by Italy's statistics office, Istat. Why are Italian men such duds at home? Two reasons were cited:

1. Late bloomers: Italian men become first-time fathers much later in life than men in other countries. The average age for Italians to become dads is 33, compared with younger than 31 for men in Spain, France and Finland. On average, Italian women have their first baby at age 27, six months before women in Finland.

2. Blame it on their mothers: As many as 40 percent of Italian men ages 30 to 34 still live with their parents, far longer than anywhere else in the world. When they eventually become fathers, they do little to help their wives since they are so accustomed to being waited on by their mothers.

Actually Obby, it's not horsesh|t. 60 Minutes had a whole report on Reason #2. They went to ITALY and talked to REAL Italians, not Italian-Americans. No offense, but is that what you were thinking?

To show I am not making this up, the segment titled 'Mammoni' was aired on March 4, 2001.

Summary:
Mammoni: So many Italian men are opting for the comfortable life their mothers provide, instead of leaving home to marry, that the birth rates are declining. Italian society has labeled them mammoni, or "mama's boys." Lesley Stahl reports.

Yes because 60 minutes is SOOO correct on everything they produce..
The sad part is-in that piece, they tried to project an image of Italian men that simply cannot be associated with all Italian men..absolutely no way..the majority of the "mammoni" (and I know this from personal experience with various cousins and friends who STILL live in Italy)are from very wealthy families who can support their deadbeat sons till the end of days because the guys are too cheap to leave and live off their own bankroll instead of Papa's..(and mamma's). Tell 60 minutes to head into some small towns where the girls are married off at 16 to 18 year old boys so they can start families and get their own farms going who don't live with momma and poppa till they are 34 or whatever they said....and yes it still happens. More frequent than not. And yes I'm talking about ITALIAN ITALIANS, not AMERICAN ITALIANS..60 minutes..pfffft.

Oh trust me, the CSJ is far from being arm breaking mobsters. I happen to be a member of the CSJ and let me tell you something Grimm, it has taken YEARS for Italians to try and over come the filthy demeaning stereotypes that have been heaped upon them for years.
They haven't done it with any "arm breaking" as you suggest-which once again-is reinforcing the negativity that has been shown to Italians, Jews, Blacks and many other ethnic and religious groups since they came to this country...Your attitude plainly sucks, and while you think you are being so obviously witty, sarcastic remarks such as the one you made that are the reason that groups like the CSJ have been created.
So..what? You think you can make a comment such as what you said that and it's going to hurt my feelings..hardly..it just makes it more apparent that you don't have the balls to take a stand against racial stereotyping yourself..

Your wit astounds me-seriously-get a clue. And in the meantime, perhaps you and your bad self should take a look at the CSJ websight or OSIA.ORG, OR UNICO.ORG and become a more informed citizen.

but the point i was trying to make, and maybe i should've used another nationality, is that they seem to be allowed to crack on their own.

Sorry to interfere with your persecution complex there Oby, but my "stereotype" of Italian-Americans has been one of generally family oriented hard working Americans. Your perception of my reality is not my reality.
You are perfectly happy to reinforce stereotypes of Italian Americans when is has a positive bias. I don't exactly see you as a credible source when discussing the matter.
Your constant talking down to me and carefully crafted insults don't help either.
I do not accept your veiled assertion that Italian Americans are better than the rest of us. That they only have good aspects and none of the bad are true. Your threats of siccing various organizations on the people who disagree with you is juvenile and totally unbecoming a person of your maturity.
If you want to celibrate your heritage that's fine, but don't rub it in my face. If you want to be Italian go live in Italy. If you want to be American stay here, America benifits greatly from the contributions provided by it's immigrants from Italy and their decendants. Do you really feel that persecuted on a day-to-day basis for your heritage? I've rarely if ever heard anyone insult anyone of Italian descent simply for their heritage. It really sounds like you're overreacting here, Obby.

And on the "stinky" issue, in my experience, the French and the Italians in their respective countries tend to put less effort into not masking/preventing smells offensive to Americans. I've been there, seen it, and smelled it. I didn't let it ruin my trips, nor did I think less of the people or generalize it to any particular group in this country.

That's cool, I'll ask a friend of mine who has been to Moldovia a few times what she thought of the Moldovians. :PMy hair stylist is from Moldova. She's a sweetheart.

Believe it or not, but Guinness (and most Stouts in general) has fewer calories per serving than most beers. People think it's a 'heavy' beer, but in reality it has roughly the same calorie content as skim milk.

:stupid:

Guinness has less calories per ounce than Coors Light or Bud Light.

I cannot chug or bong or shotgun Guinness but I can sit around and drink it for a few hours. It is yummy!!!!!

I heard about that. I think the main thing about Guinness is the fact that its thick. like Chocolate milk. I think Guinness gets more bitter the more I sip it. The first gulp tho...its silky smooth. After that...bitterness sets in...

I hate Guiness.
Tried it once and thought it was disgusting.
Ah well...to each his own. :hehehmm:

As for Italians/Italian-Americans -
I'm a 27 y/o Italian-American (50% at least, the other 45% is Irish with a 5% pinch of American Indian) and can safely say that my wife thinks I'm the best man on the planet because of how good I treat her and our daughter and how much I help around the house. In fact, the truth is - I do more house cleaning than my wife does. :naughty: I also get up with the baby on weekends so my wife can sleep in, and I also help her 50/50 with the duties of being a parent (washing bottles, feeding, changing, doing laundry, etc). Just call me "Mr. Mom". As for moving out of the house or being codependent upon my mother...I was living on my own outside of my mothers reach at age 15, and we had Chloe last December (I was 26, my wife was 28).

Thanks...like I told some friends a few days ago (when mentioning that we recently had our 1 yr wedding anniversary)...we both do pretty much the same ignorant stuff, so we tolerate each other well. :woohoo:
