So as I said in another thread, I am heading to the Big Apple next month and although there are a million better places to eat while visiting, I can't shake the feeling that I gotta eat a White Castle burger while I'm out there. I have never had one even though I have known about them since I was a kid. The Beastie Boys have been singing about them since I was about 9. I've always wanted to try them, although I have heard some East Coast folks say they're pretty crappy (the burgers not the people ;)). But I feel like I gotta have one. What do you all think who have had them? Are they all that and a bag of kettle chips?

Honest opinions are appreciated. You won't hurt my feelings.

I'll definitely stop by if I'm in the neighborhood though :)

Dude, buy a ****ing crave case.

you won't regret it.

best money you'll ever spend in your life.

i wish i could have white castles right now... i just drank 4 pitchers of beer. I yearn for those little guys. The onions explode like flavor crystals...unfortunately the closest WC is on the harlem rd. exit off of I-80. (~220 miles away)

* ok, seriously, if you're sober you'll think they're pretty ****ty....but I promise if you get **** faced you'll think they're the best thing ever.

I would probably kill for some white castles right now.

Whatever you do, DON'T RESORT TO THE FROZEN KIND.

I love White Castle...maybe once a year. Any more often may cause permanent damage. They're also very helpful for flushing your colon and intestines. You've got to try it. We used to go to one in East Rutherford after a Jets' game.

For deli, try Katz's. Yum, yum in my tum tum!!!

Belly bombers rock and suck at the same time. They're NOTHING like Krystals, except maybe in size.

White Castles is definitly an acquired taste and you're digestive system will hate you for a good 10+ hours after it. But they're so worth it. Try a double bacon cheeseburger, chicken rings, the chicken sandwhich and the jalepano burger.

find a real cool cheetah to give you a ride there and then i'd say it was worth the trip.

Yep. Carnegie Deli is famous for their sandwiches..you're bound to run into someone famous if you go there..they seat people family style at long tables..which is cool because people from all over the world go there and you never know who you'll sit by..naturally, they do have small tables too but those are for select people...The put bowls of pickles and green tomatoes on the table when you "eat in"..and man o man..after a pickle or two you won't want to eat anything else..4 people can share a sandwich I might add..prices vary but are quite inexpensive if you ask me..I paid 9 dollars for one last time I was there..Their coleslaw ROCKS. mmmmmm...
hehe do yourself a favor and bring a few baggies (to snag some pickles for the ride home ;) )..but also because even if you ask for the remainder of your sandwich "to go"..for some reason, they don't survive the trip in the wax bags..It took me a week to eat an entire sandwich..the ruebens are positively sinful I tell you..but the corned beef is right up there too..mmmmm

Oh..and don't forget a piece of cheesecake while you're there...you cannot miss this for sure..Order the cheesecake and eat that and pickles while you're there-then take the sandwhich with you! hahah

I love White Castle, but like faither, maybe once a year. It's not that the burgers are so great, it's more the whole experience. Go at 2am for the maximum experience. You also need to eat at least 10 sliders to get the full effect.

I've had frozen White Castles from the grocery store, and while they taste similar, there's just something missing.

As long as your tummy is made of "cast iron" and you can handle the excess grease and onions that make many folks cry out in pain... (RAAAZOOOR BLAAADESSS!!!!")

Then you should be fine... They taste ok going in, but they feel bad coming out, hence I stay far far away from them.

I was once having a conversation with a co-worker about sliders (the REAL name for White Castle burgers). He was saying that for greater efficiency, you should eat them while sitting on the toilet. I suggested that an even greater efficiency would be to throw them directly into the toilet and cut out the middle man. :hihi:

Every once and a while some guys will bring in a crave case at lunch and have some leftovers. The jalapeno cheese sliders aren't too bad.

It used to be that White Castle joints (I refuse to refer to them as restaurants) seemed to be built out of closed-down gas stations. I hypothesised that when there was no more room underground to drain the oil from cars that the gas station would move out and White Castle would move in and start pumping the oil back up.

I've lived in NY for 14 years and I have a White Castle 2 blocks from my house and I am proud to say I have not once tried it in all that time. I am planning to keep that streak going.

If you're going to be in NY, there's just so many choices for good food. I say don't waste a meal on White Castle.

I got a simple pastrami with cheese on wheat I think. It was really good, just alot. MMMM pickles......those are so good. I wish I had a jar.

I found a place by Pasadena/Alhambra that actually serves White Castle Hamburgers. Not sure if they are just microwaving the frozen ones.

absolutely not even close to in-n-out burgers. in-nout burgers are about fresh quality meat burgers. white castle is filling your stomach with some greasy goodness.

anyways, my take on white castle... they're great! if you're a person who enjoys a salad for a meal, loves fresh vegetables, and wants to have a good quality meal, do NOT go to white castle.

but if you love a philly cheesesteak or your steaks drowned in butter... white castle is right up your alley. they're sliders. the onions are very much like philly cheesesteaks' grilld onions, the bread...not real bread, the meat, not real meat. but they just REALLY REALLY hit the spot for me. and I NEVER had any problems with the runs.... but of course I grew up with these things as a kid - I would go at least once a month to the white castle and gobble up a bunch of these. man, now i regret not taking the trip out to a whitecastle this past weekend when i was up there.

OK esde, here's what I would suggest:

2 regular sliders (or slyders, an alternate spelling) - for the experience
2 jalapeno cheese sliders - my personal preferance
1 order of onion rings - because they are really good
supplemented with anything else off the menu that strikes your fancy

Yeck... I tried Carnegie Deli, and I don't see the point, other then as a novelty. The sandwich is too big to take a bite out of, so I ended up just eating it in pieces - essentially, I was just eating slices of lunch meat, one at a time. I prefer to have a big bite of bread/meat/cheese/lettuce/dressings then to eat it all individually, no matter how good the meat is.

Although, I will say that their cheesecake is fabulously yummy!

not enough...

http://www.whitecastle.com/_pages/menu.asp?menu=slyders

when i was 6 years old, i could eat 4 sliders and onion rings and still want more.

the "supplemented with anything else" has to be at least 4 more sandwiches.

(man i'm drooling looking at that webpage).

I'll be in NYC next weekend too. Yay Big Apple. Anyway, there's a White Castle in St. Louis, been a couple times. It's nothing fantastic, but it's fun. They taste good, I've never had stomach problems from them, but they're nowhere near as good as In-N-Out. Still, that's not the point. They're not advertising as high quality fantastic wonderful burgers. Just little munchies. Go in, get a couple for a snack, say you've done it, get a better dinner somewhere else later
