My girlfriend is gonna graduate from med school in May of next year and this year for christmas one of my gift ideas is to give her a nice stethoscope. Now, I am so far removed from the field of medicine that it is not funny. Do any of you think this is a good gift idea and what stethoscope is considered nice. I was looking at the 3M Littmann Master Cardiology powder coated black.

Yeah, I think it's a great idea. I know several guys who have given their GF/fiance/wife stethoscopes with great success. It depends on the GF though... does she want a new stethoscope (I'm assuming that she already has one but you're getting her a better one). Is she going into peds. or cards.? because then she probably does need to buy a new one anyways.

Well the other day she told me that she had a goo one but she lost it so she's using this cheap one. She's going into family medicine. Do any of you guys know what is a good stethoscope? The 3M Littmannn Master Cardiologist?

Master cardiology is damn good, and loud, but it's built mainly for adult patients (it has a bigass diaphragm). If she's interested in peds of family medicine, the Cardiology 2 or 3 may be better options.

I had the cardiology 3 but I didn't really like it that much. It was a good stethescope but they just put a diaphram on the bell and call it a pediatrics side. I say go for the Master Cardiology.

Master cardiology is great for everything but peds/children. The diaphragm is just too big. You'll hear everything (or more of everything than a normal stethescope) in an infant or small child. Yes, it's a nice stethescope (and the only one I use), but it has its limitations. A quality dual-headed one, by Littman or someone else, would probably match her needs more.

I use a Classic II S.E... so I guess I'm cheap :) whadda I know.. heh
The other thing to consider is a nice (small) black bag with her name - enough to help carry stuff, tuning fork, reflex, steth, notes, magic-8 ball, whatever..
Don't get any books. Don't get any white coats.
Consider a new PDA? always helpful and good for reference - I'd stake my life on the fact that she'll use it a lot as an intern

Great ideas. A nice leather black "doctor's" bag would be great in addition to the stethescope. I wish I had one, instead of a white coat with all my gear hanging out of it, or at least to transport stuff. Not that I use my gear all that often while stuck here in Jackson, LA seeing forensic psych patients. :)

If she's going into family and enjoys peds, I'd go with a dual headed one also. Those darn kids are so tiny that a regular stethescope, even the one with the diaphragm over the bell (which I find stupid because if you push down on the bell, it becomes a diaphragm anyways so the piece of plastic is effectively just for show) is just too darn large for the babies... unless you like hearing heartbeat, lung sounds, and bowel sounds all at the same time.

This is a weird thread. I never knew you could compare and talk about stethescopes like you do with video cards...

Yeah.. you could compare the electronic amplified stethoscope one to like an ATI 850XL or NVDIA's running SLI.. or some plastic kinda cheap ones, to say.. a GeForce2?
:)
My thought has always been this.. the size (and quality) of the pen.. is related to the cost of the drug.

I thought it was the attractiveness of the drug rep. is directly proportional to the cost of the drug.

I'll go with mf on this one, but some pens really are nice...

Attractiveness of the drug rep is proportional to the time i don't see patients. :)
or is it how well the lunch is? heh
