The apparent suicide of a woman found hanging from a tree went unreported for hours because passers-by thought the body was a Halloween decoration, authorities said.

The 42-year-old woman used rope to hang herself across the street from some homes on a moderately busy road late Tuesday or early Wednesday, state police said.

The body, suspended about 15 feet above the ground, could be easily seen from passing vehicles.

State police spokesman Cpl. Jeff Oldham and neighbors said people noticed the body at breakfast time Wednesday but dismissed it as a holiday prank. Authorities were called to the scene more than three hours later.

"They thought it was a Halloween decoration," Fay Glanden, wife of Mayor William Glanden, told The (Wilmington) News Journal.

"It looked like something somebody would have rigged up," she said

I wonder if people actually stopped at the "decoration" and had conversation there for a while. Now THAT would be way too creepy.

That's just pretty freaking creapy.

I don't know, having lived on this coast for a couple of months now, I think I get a better understanding of the morose and dark tales spun by Poe. Delaware is right between where I live and Baltimorose. I guess this weather really does drive some people nuts.

it'll be funnier if they only found out until a kid started to wack it with a stick and thought it was a pinata

That is sad that no one knew it was the neighbor. Do they not know her at all? I would like to think even though I don't like any of my neighbors that if I saw one of them hanging form a tree I would at least reconise them.

:hehehmm: I don't know how big the Mexican population is in Deleware. I was in the Baltimore area about 10 years ago, and felt as if I were the first Hispanic to ever touch soil in some of those little tows :hihi:

But I do find it sad when people feel like they gotta go out like that. I can't imagine how desperate they must feel to make it to that level.

That's sad. Suicide is such a waste to me... And then to see this? Some therapist is going to be dealing with this one in a day or two...
