Google hasn't been too kind.
Can someone give me a quick rundown of memory speeds and the processors they're designed for? (Or gimme a link that sums it up.)
I'm going to be helping someone get a computer, but I want to make sure the proc they get is going to fully utilize the memory.
I'm recommending they get a P4, if that helps.

I'd look at it the other way- select a processor first and then get memory at least as fast as the bus speed of the processor. I like good memory for reliability.

That's what I meant. Can someone give me a rundown of the P4 clock and bus speeds?
I've missed out on a lot since I built my last PC...apparently AGP is going bye bye....

Honestly, unless those folks are gonna overclock... all they need to know is that they need PC3200 or DDR 400.
That speed more or less will cover them for most of the standard P4 setups. After that, you can toss in "memory brand loyalty" to pick which one you want to use.

:agree:
unless of course.. you're getting a P4 that uses DDR2 memory, in which case you'd be better off switching back to the pc3200/DDR400 memory

What's wrong with DDR2?

Nothing is wrong with DDR2, it's just very rarely as fast as it seems like it should be. I.E. they pulled an Intel with DDR timings... Ramping up the clock speed while increasing all of the latency/timings doesnt actually mean it's any faster.....
In fact, I crunched some numbers comparing the "PC2-8000 1Ghz" DDR2 ram with DDR400 (pc3200), and it turned out that the 1Ghz ram actually took longer to do everything... i.e. it took more physical time than the pc3200 to do all of it's access' and such.
The only thing going for DDR2 in my opinion is that it's been overproduced and therefore is cheaper.. once they learn how to lower the latencies of DDR2 chips, then they'll be nice......................I'm at work... sorry bout the formatting everyone
