We didn't have much to say a couple of weeks ago when WNBA star Cheryl Swoopes announced that she's gay because, well, she's a WNBA star. (Besides, it's not like she has to worry about taking grief at road games from all of the raging heterosexuals in attendance.)

Leave it to the NFL to outdo yet another of the lower-tier sports.

According to WTSP in Tampa, two Carolina Panthers cheerleaders were arrested after an altercation sparked when (we advise that you sit down) they were caught "engaged in some type of sexual activity (http://www.tampabays10.com/news/news.aspx?storyid=20844) inside a bathroom stall."

A woman waiting to use the facilities got into an argument with the unambiguously gay duo -- which likely included statements like, "Could you please take your sexual activity elsewhere so I can poop?" -- and was punched in the face by one of them, a cheerleader named Renee Thomas.

When Thomas was arrested for battery, she gave the name of another Panthers cheerleader. She could face chares of lying to police.

Her, um, partner, Angela Keathley, was charged with disorderly conduct and obstructing or opposing an officer.

There's no word yet on whether Thomas and Keathley were fired by the Panthers. If they are, perhaps the Vikings will be interested in hiring them.

I missed the wave where being a lesbian was fashionable in college. I think it was starting up as I was finishing college. After college it was an 'IN' thing to do. You could tell by all the lesbian publicity in TV, movies and just kids experimenting and people coming out in front of the press to promote some record or something like Tatu (Everything She Said). I think it died by the time 'The L Word' and 'Queer Eye' came out on cable. The shock and awe value just for that sake is on a downturn and I think it served it's purpose of letting true lesbians come out without too much embarassment or ridicule.

Witnesses said Keathley and the woman were having sex in a stall at Banana Joe's in Channelside about 2:10 a.m. Sunday, an arrest report states.
Club patron Melissa Holden said she and other women became angry while waiting for the restroom.

Holden said she could see the two women in the stall and heard moaning. After about 15 minutes, she said, the two women emerged. Another patron complained and then "the blonde hit me in the face," Holden said.

I don't care what these girls look like in the mug shots or in the all-done-up shots . . . it's what's outside the frame that would interest me most . . . and I have to expect neither of them would disappoint in that regard ;)

So she sat there for 15 minutes listening to them moan? She didn't think to run out and grab a digital camera? I swear, people these days have no sense of courtesy to their fellow man.

And by the way, those of you knocking the brunette...having met my share of lesbians, let's just be thankful that we ended up with two "lipsticks" on this one. Otherwise, it could've been MUCH uglier (and I mean that in so many ways) ;)

UPDATED: Cheerleaders Had Sex in Bar, Witnesses Say


Two Carolina Panthers cheerleaders were charged after their arrest at a bar where witnesses told police the women had sex in a restroom.

Renee Thomas, 20, of Pittsboro, N.C., and Angela Keathley, 26, of Belmont, N.C., were taken to Hillsborough County Jail early Sunday.



Witnesses said the women were having sex in a stall with each other, angering patrons waiting in line to get into the restroom at the club in the Channelside district.

Thomas was charged with battery Sunday after allegedly striking a bar patron when she was leaving the restroom, then landed in even more trouble after police said she gave officers a driver's license belonging to another Panthers cheerleader who was not in Tampa.

Thomas, who made the trip to Florida for Sunday's game between the Panthers and Tampa Bay Buccaneers, was released from jail on $500 bail before police learned she was not the person she claimed to be.

Providing police with a false name is a misdemeanor. However, Thomas was charged Monday with giving a false name and causing harm to another _ a third-degree felony punishable by probation or a jail term of 1 to 5 years, said police spokeswoman Laura McElroy.

Meanwhile, detectives are trying to determine how Thomas gained possession of the driver's license of the third cheerleader.

Keathley, charged with disorderly conduct and resisting arrest, was released on $750 bail about an hour before the Panthers played the Bucs at Raymond James Stadium. The cheerleaders were not in town to perform at the game.
