I got burned for ~$300. Apparently the ebay sale wasn't paypal protected (who knew such a thing existed) and they can't recover funds from the fraud.

I pretty much hate it too.
I think if Amex got into the internet payments, they would beat paypal hands down.

Love 'em. As an eBay seller, I must say they are the shiz-nit.
BTW, not PayPal's fault you got hosed. It's a crappy seller. You would have been screwed no matter how you paid them...

Lots of sellers are having chargeback problems. Just a matter of time Mike. My problem with paypal is they make it too easy for buyers and sellers to be defrauded. They err on the side of fraud.

I've been selling for 5 years with minimal (~2,3) issues over that period of time. Granted, I'm selling items that are marketed to an audience that isn't likely to defraud me, but that's still a small number. So I'll give you that my perspective may be skewed...
It's also worth saying that PayPal is not as good as they were before eBay bought them. After the big bad machine swallowed them up, things have gone a bit downhill.
Still, I like 'em. They make my life easy, make my $$$ transactions easy, make my auctions easy. I'm still with the  crowd.

I'd been buying/selling for 5yr+ with no problems either too. :heh:
Think about it this way though, the more customers turned off to paypal and ebay the less demand for your goods which hurts your bottom line (unless you offer another convenient alternative).

True, but like I said I'm targeting a niche (older, mostly white folks...grandmother, grandfather types) that I don't see this affecting. If it did, I'd be a bit more concerned.

Honestly, I haven't had a problem with PayPal...
But ultimately, I trust my CC company... if I have a problem, I contact them first.

:stupid:
If there's a problem with the funds, I find that it is best to go through either the CC Company or the Bank. They will get the money back...they just won't be calling you for it. :D

Maybe Google will decide to give Paypal a run for their money.

I'm saving that as a last resort. I have faith in my CC but I'm afraid Paypal's gonna cut me off (Big loss there though huh )

You ever try to set up a Visa/Mastercard "merchant" account?
Pretty much... don't totally blame PayPal for that... blame Visa/MC some as well.

I've never had a problem with them (knocks on wood grain plastic laminate).
It's a good idea for everyone who uses Paypal to read through http://www.paypalsucks.com/ - just to know how to protect yourself & know what the risks are.

I was a bit uncomfortable with the way that Paypal almost insists on having their hooks into my checking account. But when I pay, I usually switch the payment source from my checking account to my Visa card (in spite of the way that their interface moans and complains when you do that).

I actually created a separate 'checking' account for paypal that's not connected to my regular account. Just in case.....

Honestly, I created a separate checking account for ALL "electronic transactions"... and not just PayPal.
Seemed like the "smart" thing to do to keep track of this kind of stuff....

But I suspect that you're still better off making the payment come from a credit card (i.e., potentially beter fraud protections from the credit card).

Yes, and I usually do pay by CC, unless the seller requests direct payments (and some do who have gotten burned by CC reversals). As long as their feedback is good I'm OK with that. No problems so far... but then again I usually buy pretty small items (under $100).
The account is mainly for depositing money INTO, and to keep PP away from my regular checking account.

I love PayPal, and will continue to do so until I am screwed.
Having grown up in the pre-internet, pre-credit card transaction days, I am probably a little less comfortable thinking a credit card or payment service has any responsibility to protect me. MikeD is right, IN got screwed by a seller, not by PayPal. If PayPal didn't exist, he still would have been screwed.

I just did the very same thing. I moved bank accounts (Chase sucks BAD!) and opened an account at Wells Fargo just to PayPal can't get their grubs on my main account.
PayPal needs some major work. As of yesterday, I have been on eBay for exactly 8 years (and they didn't even send me a card - waaaaa :umm: ) and let's face it, PayPal is a evil we can't work around. Yet lately people are more and more under the impression that eBay is a store. If something is wrong, you can send it back... and if the seller won't take it back, you can do a chargeback.
My key gripes are that 1) They don't go to bat for you when something goes wrong (they act like a venue, just as eBay does) and 2) they do not have a billing/shipping address option. This is a biggie when you realize how many buyers have summer/winter homes or want to have an item shipped to work, yet their billing address is at home.
When I had someone use either a stolen credit card or identity theft and bought a large item from me, PayPal actually refused to let me know what was going on. The only reply I got from them was when I wrote a smoker letter to the buyer (actually victim I understand), asking me to be patient. MY ASS! I was the victim when I lost hundreds of dollars without recourse.
What PayPal needs is competition. Make that, what WE need is an equal/better alternative to PayPal.

I don't see why paypal doesn't just send the police to his house for fraud. Or give me his home address so I can call the police and take action. He was paypal verified so I thought he was safe.

In my instance, that's the kicker. I had a signature of the person who accepted what amounted to being stolen goods. Since PayPal refused to disclose anything, I could not contact the police anywhere... I mean, what do you tell them?
"Hello, sargeant, I think I was screwed over by someone... can you help me?
What happened?
Well, I don't know.
What do you mean, "you don't know?"
Someone bought something from me, but the credit card has a problem. PayPal won't tell me what it is.

Cool, have PayPal charged with conspiracy to defraud after the fact.

Update: I called my credit card company for a charge back and so far so good. Paypal hasn't seemed to care much. I give PayPal a solid C-.
