What is the fastest speed you have recorded using 2.4X or 4X DVD media? Is it even possible to record faster than the advertised speed?

I have a bunch of slow media and am considering getting one of those NEC 3540 drives and recording at 8X. But if it won't work, I will forget about getting it.

I have recorded 4x media at 8x speed on my NEC 3520 (with modified aftermarket firmware). The speed that you get will vary based on the media. Some 8x media will burn at 16x on my drive, while other 8x will burn at 12x. To exceed the "rated" speed, you will need a modified firmware (I've posted the link to the place I got mine in other threads here.)

Thanx..so do you think if I got a brand new 3540, the firmware as shipped would not have to be updated?

You will still need to update the firmware. The "official" firmware will only burn media at its designates speeds. To get the boost, check out this:
