Here's my dilema... I need to see if I can find an affordable place to live within decent commuting distance of downtown DC. Yes yes... just like everybody else.
I just got offered a job out there like 5 minutes ago...
Frankly, I love DC. I'd like some place decent... doesnt have to be spectacular or anything. I would like to keep it under $900 or so if possible.
A friend here suggested Laurel, MD. I don't mind having to drive a little bit to get to the Metro to get in and out... but I'd rather not spend more than 45 minutes driving just to get to a 45 minute train ride.
Thank you so much for your help!

Hey Kimchi, you got space for another roomie?
Laurel: uhh, I'd say no. I think that's probably farther out than you'd like to be.

Woah boy. Is it just yourself? Would you consider roommates? Does $900 include utilities or not? There's a friend of a friend of a friend who lives near the Silver Spring metro that I think pays $1100/month and includes all utilities.

or live up here in baltimore and take the MARC train down to DC =)
baltimore is generally cheaper than DC.

What kind of setup would you want? There are studio apartments available in good parts DC for under $900 but if you're looking for something bigger than a studio you'll be commuting or in a bad part of town.
Check out washington post's rental section (they partner with apartments.com) and look in NOVA communities; lower taxes, lower rent, nicer amenities than DC oftentimes. There's a lot that's doable along the orange line in VA.

I hadnt considered the $900 utility inclusive... I pay $650 now plus all my utils, so anything I could get thrown into the rent would be great.
I'd just like to live somewhere that is within an acceptable distance of both downtown and some sort of social scene... afterall, being 25 and single doesn't exactly lend itself to the old folk's neighborhood.
I am trying to avoid both roomates and studio apartments.

Yea, I think it'd have to be a studio or roommates if you wanted to be near a social scene (and keep things at or below $900).

i pay $750 before utilities and rent a room in a house. it's in a great location called clarendon (whole foods, barnes and noble, apple store, etc) are all a 5 minute walk from me. but apartments would be a lot more. maybe around $1200? i don't know about studios.
