Ok, I know that we've already had the discussion about whether or not the word gay means the same as it did in 1953.

But my question today is...why do people insist on using the homosexual term "gay" or the phrase "that's gay" for things that aren't even physically allowed to be gay?

For instance, I can see someone calling another person gay. Whether the truth or in jesting. But how can someone say that a car is gay? Can the car actually have homosexual relations with another car?

My brother ALWAYS uses this phrase...with anything he can use it on. I just don't get it. Enlightenment?

(Yes, yes...I know. Just waiting for all you super hilarious people to write "this post is gay" or " not gay!"...I figure I've got that coming to me.)

this is how i see people using it ......

being gay is bad in SOME way to SOME people so when (SOME) people use the word gay "that car's gay" it's as they're saying "i don't like it, it's ugly" ....etc

from my own experience ......but i may be wrong!

Yeah, people who think that gayness=stupidness will use gay in that manner. It is very derogatory.

As what happens with other words over time that have gained additional meanings, the word gay now has a third one: dumb/crappy.

They use gay because it is now a synonym for queer (meaning strange in this case). And queer has more negative conotations for some reason so it's use is discouraged.

I HATE it when people use gay out of context. MOREOVER people use gay as a derogatory word. I've never seen a word go from happy ---> derogatory.

people need to figure out that the word gay, being used in a derogatory sense is slapping homosexuality right in the face.

It didn't bother me that much, because I did it (occasionally still use the term that way), but then EVERY teenager seems to use the phrase now. Now it just bugs.

Doesn't bug me. English is a living language.
