Simon Malls Tailor Ads to Passersby

PROMO Xtra

Simon Property Group has installed interactive, digital signage in and around two malls in Atlanta and Westminster, CA.

The signs pick up FM radio signals in passing cars and tailor the ad's message to the demographics of the radio station that's playing.

The signs also give passers by text codes to request more information via cell phone. Simon calls it "outdoor narrowcasting."

Sounds like BS. It's not like the car is broadcasting FM AFAIK.

:stupid:

Plus, why do people have to think up the dumbest names for things... 'narrowcasting'??

Hmm. Near my house. Good thing I don't listen to FM radio. But how would they figure out what station I'm listening to? Is there a distinct loss in power of the transmission if a radio is tuned to a frequency?

Wait, so if I turned on all the radios in my house to Death Metal, the ads in the new sign they put up will change?
