:stupid: i've done a ton of searching online, and found squat. i just try not to irritate it, and wait until it decides to go away. :( in fact, i have one now.

I have been thinking about working on the cure for these. I'd get rich :) I get them sometimes almost a quarter of an inch in Diameter or so. I had some toothpaste from Rembrandt that was supposed to reduce their frequency and it atleast seemed to work, but I could have just been in a slow time for them.

I'm told they're primarily caused by excess acid in your stomach and stress. I've had drs tell me to chew Tums every day to combat them since Tums give you calcium, but I've never followed through on that plan.

The best advice I can give in regards to getting them to go away -
don't mess with it...leave it alone

My experience (of well over 10 yrs of them) has been that the more crap you do to them, the longer they stick around. Nowadays if I get one...I don't put anything on it, I don't gargle with salt water, I do absolutely nothing different than when I don't have one. Well, except avoid spicy foods and also not to eat anything with tomato sauce (which kills me 'cause I'm italian) because of the acid.

The best thing to help remedy the pain is some stuff called Canka; it's in a little tube with a blue cap/applicator and it will numb the crap out of your mouth and make it a little more tolerable. Again though...I usually just leave 'em alone and they go away quicker. :thumb:

Get a tongue scraper and use it often. It will reduce the time that they stay on/in your mouth.

i don't think i ever get them. i've had the thing where you bite your cheek and it gets sore/sensitive but don't know about canker sores. are they on your cheek, tongue, or gums?

I think you can get them pretty much anywhere. Being triggered by trauma (like biting yourself) isn't uncommon. I mostly get them on my bottom inner lip towards the front.

you can get a herpes breakout inside your mouth (that is what cold sores are)
but canker sores (aphthous ulcers) are not related to the herpes virus.

canker sores are a mystery. we do know they can start after you irritate your mucosa from biting it, scraping it with a toothbrush, or abraiding it somehow. also they tend to run in families, and stress, poor nutrition, food allergies and menstrual periods can initiate them. Toothpastes that contain SLS (sodium lauryl sulfate) seem to cause canker sores in some people.

a canker sore is actually an auto immune response - your body is attacking itself for that short time.

there are meds you can get your dentist to prescribe to help ease the pain, but honestly i don't know of any that shorten the duration or really do much for pain relief overall.

The problem I have with pain relief methods is that the pain comes back in like 30 min.

the difference between a canker sore and a herpes sore in the mouth is that the herpes infection only occurs on immobile tissue that covers bone like the hard palate and the gums. while a canker sore usually shows up on tissue that can move.

no they are definitely not contagious. they have nothing to do with the herpes virus.

Rinse with hydrogen peroxide mixed with scope and it will help reduce the outbreaks. You can also seach for Colgate Peroxil (SP?). The hydrogen peroxide and scope will be cheaper. The ingredients in CP are basically HP and a flavor. I don't get them but my wife does every now and then triggerd by stress. I found out about the stuff becuase my dentist said it was good to help kill germs and reduce plaque.

actually they are similar to cold sores in that respect, either you get 'em or you don't. if your parents get them you are more likely to also.

I used to get them a lot, but not any more. I remember once talking to one of my doctors about them, and he said (at the time - this was about 25 years ago) that they only thing they could do was "burn" (cauterize) them with a silver nitrate stick, and since that stuff is quite poisonous it can only be done by a doctor.

I always found ground up watermellon seeds work GREAT on sores inside the mouth. Try it sometime, dry up some watermellon seeds, bust it out in a pestel and morter(sp?) and dab a little watermellon seed on your sore. it works wonders! well..on me at least.
