Elderly Ga. Man on Oxygen Foils Robbers

Sun Nov 20, 9:43 AM ET

SAVANNAH, Ga. - Despite being 83 years old and reliant on oxygen tubes for a lung ailment, Harry Carpenter wouldn't let his wife of 57 years be robbed by knife-wielding intruders in his own home.

Two would-be robbers forced their way into the home of Carpenter and his wife, Jackie, Wednesday evening while the two were having dinner, according to a police report.

One of them made Harry Carpenter sit down in the sun room, while the other went with Jackie Carpenter, 80, to get money from her bedroom.

Carpenter tried to come to his wife's rescue but was threatened with the knife.

Then he got his break — his wife pretended to faint and the intruder who was holding him went into the other room to see what was happening.

Carpenter shuffled to the laundry room, where he kept an old, unloaded rifle that he used to shoot squirrels, he said.

When one of the intruders came back, he found Carpenter aiming the rifle at him and yelled at his companion to flee. Police were unable to locate the two suspects, who didn't get any money.

Some people suck, preying on folks in their 80's! Good thing the intruder didn't pull his own weapon out. His probably would have been loaded. You go Grandpa!

that rocks so hard. i would have loved to see not only the look on the face of the robber, but also an 80-year-old dude on an oxygen tank with a rifle in his hands. pure awesomeness, through and through...

Badass. Though he should have loaded it. It's poor form and dangerous to brandish an unloaded weapon. Like others have said, he wouldn't have had a prayer if they had called his bluff.

Thing again, cool story.

At first I thought the article said that the 83 yo man had a 57 yo wife. I was thinking "What a pimp!". Then, I re-read the story. Poor guy has been married to the same woman for 57 years. How sad.

now.. now.. navyones. not all people are sad to be married for that long to the same person. my grandparents just celebrated their 60th, and i got a right sweet picture of them kissing by their anniversary cake. (i kept stalling and telling them my camera wasn't ready so they would keep kissing :D )

yes, they are happy still. they are my inspiration. :)
