Group ranks most dangerous U.S. cities
Camden, New Jersey, named at top of list

Monday, November 21, 2005; Posted: 12:39 p.m. EST (17:39 GMT)
CAMDEN, New Jersey (AP) -- For the second year in a row this destitute city of Camden, New Jersey, has been named the nation's most dangerous, according to a company's annual ranking based on crime statistics.

Last year, the distinction seemed to hurt city boosters' feelings more than it harmed revitalization efforts. This time, city leaders are offended by the ranking, calling it unfair.

"We're doing so many nice things now. It's unfortunate that somebody always wants to bad-mouth Camden," Mayor Gwendolyn Faison said.

The city took the top spot last year from Detroit, which remained No. 2 in the most dangerous city rankings, to be released Monday by Morgan Quitno Press.

The Lawrence, Kansas-based company publishes "City Crime Rankings," an annual reference book.

Listed as the most dangerous cities are: Camden, New Jersey; Detroit, Michigan; St. Louis, Missouri; Flint, Michigan; Richmond, Virginia; Baltimore, Maryland; Atlanta, Georgia; New Orleans, Louisiana; Gary, Indiana; Birmingham, Alabama.

At the other end of the scale, the safest are named as: Newton, Massachusetts; Clarkstown, New York; Amherst, New York; Mission Viejo, California; Brick Township, New Jersey; Troy, Michigan; Thousand Oaks, California; Round Rock, Texas; Lake Forest, California; Cary, North Carolina.

Development projects
Camden, a former industrial city across the Delaware River from Philadelphia, is known for a history of corrupt politicians, drug-dealing and murders. It has been among the Top 10 in the most dangerous city rankings in each of the eight years Morgan Quitno released them. By most measures it is also among the nation's poorest.

The state has poured $175 million into the city to spur development projects and take over parts of its government, the city's aquarium doubled in size and a new library and technology center were built. Tourism continues to increase along the river, home to the aquarium, an amphitheater, a minor-league baseball park and a retired battleship.

But about 100 fewer prospective students than expected attended Rutgers University's downtown campus last year, something Provost Roger Dennis attributes to the crime ranking and a serial rapist who assaulted women near and on campus last fall.

Police are now using computers to try to track crime trends, and more officers are patrolling the city's neighborhoods.

Authorities say that has helped drive down the most serious crimes by 18 percent in the first 10 months of 2005 compared with the same period a year earlier.

Some residents say their neighborhoods feel a bit safer.

"I haven't heard that many gunshots," said Gracy Muniz, 22, a mother of three who lives in North Camden.

Critics note that Morgan Quitno's ranking is based on data from last year, when the city of 80,000 averaged a murder a week. Murders from January through October were down by 45 percent compared with the same period in 2004.

Scott Morgan, president of Morgan Quitno, said Friday that while the numbers may not be perfect, they are one of the only ways to compare crime in different cities.

Neither, but my sister-in-law lives in Cary, NC. She's happy to have made the safest list.

Looks like my Atlanta is on the list. Seriously, I don't feel too in danger here. After living in Los Angeles this place seems much more tame.

I'm surprised that Los Angeles doesn't make the top 10.

:woo: :wavey: Camden, New Jersey, has been the worst place to live for 60 years from what I've heard from people that have lived near there. Its Definitely a place to avoid at all costs while traveling. :johnwoo2: :faint:

Lake Forest and Mission Viejo? Well, actually, Mission Viejo makes sense .. but I didn't think Lake Forest woulda been on the good list (in seems to be more of an 'average' city in terms of crime).

They were talking about this list on the news last night and trying to de-bunk it and show how fake it was. Apparently these were based off statistics in 2003 or something...and StL shows a decline in crime over the last year.

Nevertheless, I'm glad to live outside of St. Louis out in Fenton now...all I have to worry about out here is hoosiers and rednecks. While living in the city I did have my car broken into one time but otherwise (in my 24 yrs of city living) never had any other problems.

N.O. is dangerous. Heh...no news to me. Though it seems safer now with fewer people. I still stay prepared, though. :)

It's no surprise that Thousnad Oaks, CA is on the safest list. I would swear they would send three cars to a report of someone spittng on the sidewalk. Four cars on a slow day.

I'm near Round Rock. And it sounds the same as Thousand Oaks, haha, at least the county that Round Rock is in.

Yes, quite contrary to popular belief, NYC is now one of, if not THE, safest big cities in the country.

edit: sorry, I thought NYC had made the "safe" list....oops! Anyway that's what I've heard from many people. Probably from some Bloomberg spin-doctor or something.

Most people confuse the two things (and Im glad you dont!)

They see it as just because it might be dirty and t he cost of living is low, that its automatically dangerous... but I am shocked (and grateful) that a city in LA County is not on the dangerous list!

But in Thousand Oaks, you might not get shot at but burnt down!!

Are you kidding me? I have never been to Mission Viejo so I can't say anything about there but I lived in North Chicago for several years. Lake Forest is the safest place I've ever seen. I don't think the cops there would know what to do with me if I littered.

I didn't know we had another St. Louisan on G|A...and you've been a member for five years.

I honestly think downtown St. Louis had become more dangerous because so many have packed up and moved to St. Charles, Fenton, Jeffco, and Columbia after getting tired of all the BS in the city. Areas that used to be safe like South City have lost a lot of good residents due to cheaper housing away from all the city noise.
Another note, these statistics don't really look at the metro area, which effectively excludes 50 billion municipalities. When you take the area as a whole, St. Louis isn't so bad. Just stay away from north grand after dark.

mine didn't make it either. I would say we are pretty average. Not as bad as some and not as good as others.
