My son is getting engaged in a couple days (shhh, don't tell anyone...!) So we're adding his fiancée to our list to buy a gift for Christmas. The budget limits us to about a $50+ gift.
She likes photography, and she's very artistic. So we're not talking portraits here... She also seems to prefer film photography and avoids digital.
Anyway, I was poking around eBay and I ran across some less expensive medium format cameras (Seagull, Lubitel). Would these make a good gift for someone like that?

I'm not familiar with those brands, but I would venture that buying someone who'se seriously into photography a camera like that would be akin to buying a master pianist one of those toy (a.k.a. Charlie Brown comic strip) pianos.

Well, she's not "seriously" into photography. You know how there's a segment of society that prefers the cheap, crappy Holga cameras? They're horrible and cheap, but the "artsy" types love them. I guess that's the kind of thing I'm going for.

Why not go for a safer bet, like some really awesome frames or such?

After googling, I found out there's a name of the genre I'm talking about: "Toy Cameras". After reading a bit about it, I'm convinced, she's the type who would be totally into it.
Anyway, I have a different angle on gift giving. Instead of giving safe, practical gifts, I like to find a highly personalized gift that reflects that person's personality. Sometimes I get it wrong, but when I get it right, it's really cool.

I'm the same way. I once got a leather-bound version of Lord of the Rings and had a person's name imprinted on it. Awesome gift, awesome reaction. :)

Toy Cameras are far from artsy. They are VERY trendy/commercial toys that regular people use to pretend to be artsy. If the person is serious at all about photography they're gonna find the Toy Cameras ridiculous!! Trust me.
