does anyone actually still believe all the BS about pilgrims and indians getting together for a 'nice' thanksgiving? i know enough about history to know what happened between the pilgrims & indians and it makes it really hard to even celebrate thanksgiving w/o that thought stuck in my mind. so are we thankful for the mass genocide of the native americans by the pilgrims (of course this isn't taught in school; too controversial). its too bad the country is so ignorant and blind. if this is a day to be thankful for what we have we should change the day and month for 'our t-day' IMO, so it doesn't coincide with the ****ed up pilgrims t-day. sorry to have to play debbie downer today (u would know what im talking about if you watch SNL on a regular basis to see this skit).

I think the native americans did share their food with the pilgrims. That I believe but the summer following the pilgrims probably tried to convert the natives, failed and then decided to slaughter them.

you know, i understand where you're coming from, but the way i look at it, modern society has redefined all these holidays to make them more universally appealing.
sure, at the core of thanksgiving, it's intended to "celebrate" the pilgrims/indians shindig, but nowadays it's not about that any more; it's more about "oh, let's have a day off to eat turkey and be thankful for all the things we have." that's not so bad.
SELF EDIT:
i had written a whole bunch of stuff on halloween and christmas and how their meanings have changed in modern society, but i refrained from posting those opinions in fear of catching heat or starting a flamefest...
I celebrate being with people I care about, Turkey and all good turkey accompanying dishes. I could give a DAMN about the pilgrims.

Personally, I don't care about the mass genocide of a populace, whether a savior was actuallly born, or the birthday of this or any other nation. I just care about the food. As long as I get food, I'm happy.

I didn't bother rading the last few articles but the first one is written by a guy who carries around his bible and is uncertain that the world will end at the turn of millenium? Can someone say extremist?

i don't know ANYONE who celebrates it to commemorate the pilgrims/indian thing. and heck, if you want to get technical, they shouldn't even be called "indians," but rather the native americans or first nations people or whatever.
but yeah. as people mentioned above, it's got a different meaning nowadays.

those first two articles really don't help the case at all, but the Dean one was good and I think, very honest. It's true - the Pilgrims didn't slaughter the indians, those that came after worked that magic. And the indians did some slaughter too. Basically, people suck, eat your turkey and STFU.

:stupid: anyone that has the least bit of knowledge about the pilgrims knows they were in no condition to slaughter anyone. they barely made it themselves.

Of course, we all know that anyone that respects the Bible is never to be trusted.
I recommend that you do read the last - written from a quite neutral standpoint.
