Heisman Trophy candidates prepare for voting process

Heisman Trophy voters have one last opportunity to eye the front-runners.

No. 1 Southern California, led by its dynamic duo of Matt Leinart and Reggie Bush, faces No. 11 UCLA on Saturday with a chance to claim a spot in the national title game.

Vince Young and No. 2 Texas try to secure their place in the Rose Bowl against Colorado in the Big 12 championship game.

Conventional wisdom put Bush at the head of the Heisman pack after his off-the-charts performance against Fresno State 513 all-purpose yards two weeks ago.

Young appeared to be inching ahead in support until Bush went off against the Bulldogs in a 50-42 victory. Then Young came out flat in a 40-29 win at Texas A&M last Friday, and Bush got another bump in the straw polls.

Leinart, last year's Heisman winner, is looking a lot like the third candidate in a two-man race. But much could change on Saturday, when the stakes are high and the games are few.

Maybe UCLA's Drew Olson, leading the nation in passing efficiency, or tailback Maurice Drew can make a late push to New York City for the Heisman handout Dec. 10 by leading the Bruins to an upset of USC. Seven conference championships will be determined from Thursday to Saturday.

The Mid-American Conference gets it going Thursday night with Akron facing Northern Illinois for the league crown.

The Big 12, Atlantic Coast Conference, Conference USA and the Southeastern Conference play championship games on Saturday.

UCLA can cause a three-way tie for the Pac-10 title with Oregon by beating USC. Fresno State can do the same in the Western Athletic Conference by beating Louisiana Tech Friday night.

Fresno State would share the title with Boise State and Nevada

Hoping Bush gets it!

No doubt it's Bush. Leinart faded down the stretch, became a two horse race. Bush's game against FSU sealed the deal. He was phenomenal that night...

Reggie Bush will win the Heisman.

Reggie Bush will win the Heisman.

And should be the first pick in next year's draft. If Leinart or someone else (Ferguson) is taken above him, that would be a mistake...

:stupid:...mostly. I think Leinart did fine, but Bush outshined him. And Young lost it for himself last week. Bush gets it, and it's well-deserved.

I meant faded from contention...not on the field. The guy had a great year.

In that case, I'm totally with stupid. No qualifiers. :)

Some of that stuff was just sickening. He's a beast...

Vince Young lost the Heisman in his last game where he looked very average.

Earlier in the season there were some concerns that West Coast voters would split the vote between Leinart and Bush, but now I think Bush has the concensus.

Reggie Bush has 198 rushing yards in 17 minutes of play.

It is not even worth the cost of airfare to fly the 3 other finalists out to NY.

If Reggie doesn't get it, the voters are just blind. It was unreal how he tore UCLA apart.

First time I got to see him play. He is unbelievable! If you don't stop him right away, he is gone! They said he trains with another great running back- San Diego's LaDanien Tomlinson. There have been some great running backs coming out of SD.

I wanted to keep my options open but after seeing yesterday's game, no contest.

If I had a football video game, and then used some game hack to make a player do exactly what was the ideal thing at every opportunity, it still wouldn't be as crazy as how Reggie Bush played yesterday.

so, if it's SF drafting first, there's no question they should draft him. but if it's houston that gets first pick, i'm not so sure if they should draft on talent or need.

what i'd like to see houston do is trade dominic davis for some O line and draft bush...but dunno if that'll be what eventually happens.

I believe Reggie Bush should and will win the Heisman but please don't use the UCLA game as a reason why. UCLA has the worst rush defense in all of college football, giving up 238.6 ypg. They allowed two Arizona running backs to go over 100 yards and allowed them to run for 9.6 and 7.1 ypc. The guy who had the 9.6 ypc, Mike Bell, averaged 4.3 ypc in all his other games during the season.

If you want to point to a game where Reggie won the Heisman, look at the Fresno St game. Bush was amazing in that game against a solid defense.

I will be very curious to see what type of numbers Bush puts up in the Rose Bowl. It will be the first time all season that he has seen speed on the defensive side of the ball that can begin to compare with his.

Can't see the voters selecting Young over Bush. This year it's Matt's turn to watch his teammate pick up the Heisman.
