NISSAN DEVELOPS WORLD'S FIRST CLEAR PAINT
THAT REPAIRS SCRATCHES ON CAR SURFACES
TOKYO (Dec. 2, 2005)-- Nissan Motor Co., Ltd., has developed the world’s first clear paint that repairs scratches on painted car surfaces, including scratches from car-washing machines, off-road driving and fingernails.
“Scratch Guard Coat” contains a newly developed high elastic resin that helps prevent scratches from affecting the inner layers of a car’s painted surface. With “Scratch Guard Coat” a car’s scratched surface will return to its original state anywhere from one day to a week, depending on temperature and the depth of the scratch.
The water-repellant paint also has a higher resistance to scratches compared with conventional clear paints. A vehicle painted with “Scratch Guard Coat” will have only one-fifth the abrasions caused by a car-washing machine compared with a car covered with conventional clear paint. Scratches from car-washing machines account for the majority of scratches to painted car surfaces.
“Scratch Guard Coat” is effective for about three years.
“Scratch Guard Coat” will be applied for the first time on an SUV model that is scheduled for a partial makeover in the near future. The paint will be applied to the car’s chassis, bumpers, door mirrors, among other parts.

Nissan is going to make lots of $$$ if this thing ever makes it to the market.
BTW I need that for my car.

Yeah, I found another need for it today. Stinking big rig lost something big enough to ding my car's roof twice. I just got it back from the dealership yesterday.
I think this is way better than using touchup paint. That stuff just glops.

bad thing is, those images are photoshopped... kinda hurts their credibility...
more than likely though, they didnt have the time or something to take real pictures.
i say its photoshopped because i can take both picks, layer them in photoshop, and turn the top layer on and off and no pixels change except for a little brightness, and the scratches.
i doubt they figured out a way to take the exact same pic, w/ same shadows, same time of day, and account for the movement of the sun, and manage it w/ no change in color because of changes in the atmosphere and cloud cover....

Yeah, that is probably the case Nano.
I've read about this in a couple other forums while looking for the original document, and found that people seem to in general have concerns with how this paint will affect other aspects of their ownership.
.. like will they be able to wax their car? (..if the wax chips off, but not the paint, it still looks scratched, therefore this wouldnt 'technically' be working..)
google it up if you want or are interested.
adios,

You may be simply assuming the photos were taken outside . . . it is quite possible they were taken indoors and professionally lit in a studio . . . in which case, lighting, composition, etc., would be easily replicable.

I'm aware you are a photo enthusiast. I love photography as well. I'm simply suggesting that it is quite possible (likely) they are actual photographs and are not chopped. I agree that it is very unlikely they could have replicated lighting so consistently if they were shot outside. However, given that it is extremely unlikely that Nissan would release a press release featuring a faked photograph to promote results of a product, this would lead me to believe the photos were taken under controlled conditions.
I work in advertising and work with PR teams very frequently . . . they defeat their own work if they create negative PR by releasing dubious announcements . . . I have to expect Nissan is a little smarter than to release a document that involves faked photographic evidence of results. They would never be in a position where they wouldn't have time to take real photographs. Nissan is releasing the press release . . . they dictate the timing.

Seems easiest if you take a picture of a perfect car, scratch it up, take another picture and put them in the other order

For us surfer dudes, that would be waaay cool. Ding repair good enough for cars gotta be good enough for the pricier custom boards. We all better start buying stock in whichever Nissan division this stuff is going to sell! :agree:

Butch, I see where you're coming from and I totally agree that it's hard to believe a large company like Nissan would pull something off like that, but I think Nano's right in this isolated case. There's both tarmac and the reflection from the sun. I don't think they would go through all the trouble in a studio to replicate that. And assuming it's outside, a "one week later" shot with the exact same camera/sun location? I doubt it.

Anyway, it's still a great idea. If it works as well as advertised then nissan sales will definitely go up up up.
