View Full Version : Weird Problem Using 16X DVD Media

I bought a NEC 3550 DVD burner. When I use 8X or slower media, everything is OK. However, most of the time when using 16X media and Nero, I will notice that the two progress charts will go to zero, the hard drive sounds like it is turning off (and maybe even the power supply?), a delay of about 15-20 seconds and everything is back to normal.

I have read that burning at 16X uses a lot of CPU resources. The CPU is a Pentium 2.4, the memory is 512 MB and the hard drive is a 15K IBM SCSI unit, which does get blazing hot real fast.

I have the cache set at max in Nero.

Inferior power supply?

One thing that I've found is that if I am burning at a decent speed, I can't be using my primary hard drive as the source of the burn. My main hd is on sata, so I keep an IDE drive plugged in that I use as the "burn from" drive. If I try to burn from my main hd, the burn speed gets dropped way down. (I realize this isn't your problem, but just thought I'd pass it along).

I would recommend going to http://club.cdfreaks.com/forumdisplay.php?f=86 and searching on "3550" - lots of good stuff there (and things that will let you burn decent 8x media at 12x or 16x).

I couldn't find much about my problem on that site. But I did try burning from my IDE drive and it appears to have solved the problem. I will try a few more 16X discs and see if it works all of the time.

Thanks a lot.

Correction: The SCSI drive did it again. It even happened when transferring the 4.6 GB file to the IDE drive.
