AMD Athlon XP Processors

I have an XP 2400 and since they have quit making the XP line and the Athlon 64s are booming I figured I could get a good price for a 3000 or 3200 to upgrade- but wow! They are still pretty pricey. NewEgg doesn't have any listed anymore and ZipZoomFly, my other favorite place to shop has the 3000 for about $269 and the 3200 for $299! That is still more than my 2400 cost almost three years ago. You can pick up a much better Athlon 64 (at least a 3500) for that price range- though granted you would need a new mobo to go with it. I have some programs I do not want to lose so I really don't want to go the 64 route yet since that would probably require reinstalling everything. I really expeced them to be around $100 to $150. At this price, it is not worth it at all.

Depending on the production date and core you might be able to overclock it quite a bit.

I encounter a similar dillema when I repair computers. I have found that fry's Friday/weekend deals are decent, although I have found the quality to be lacking in the intel area.

I snapped up a couple 3000s earlier this year before they announced the demise of the socket A. I paid $130 each for them at the time. I think what you're running into Zippyjuan is supply and demand market forces here. Hopefully I can stick it out a couple more years on my socket A platform here before I'm forced to upgrade again.

My processor is locked- I had tried to OC before. My performance isn't really a problem, I just thoutht I could get a fairly inexpensive upgrade.

I didn't have to reformat when i went from a barton 2500 to a venice 3200... I don't think you'll have a problem. Although honestly, it really didn't make a big difference for me. Only reason i upgraded was because i fried the barton trying to OC it in a silent sytem.... woops. still worked just wouldn't do games.

So you replaced your motherboard and went to an Athlon 64 processor and everything worked OK? Might have had to re-verify Windows? And welcome back!

yeah no problems, it found all kinds of new hardware for awhile after the first boot-up. I still had my 9600xt agp so i used a gigabyte NF3 board instead of bumping to NF4 PCIe.

but i use xp pro.

Something to consider then. Thank you. I did some more checking and it can depend on how much of a change you make- for some Windows XP will start up fine and some need to do a repair install followed by redoing all updates and service packs and for some even that was not enough and a re-install was required. Most likely a call to Microsoft to verify your OS is needed when you change more than a couple of items.
