I have an old Dell Poweredge 2300 server sitting here, and I'm thinking about upgrading the drives that came with it. Trouble is, I don't know what I'm looking for.

The server is about 4-5 years old (at least -- it uses a P3 650MHz slot1 CPU), and the main thing I know about the drives is that they have a single connector on the back (and they are hot-swappable).

My question is, what sort of drives should I be looking for?

The 2300 uses 80-pin SCA Ultra2/LVD SCSI drives. Any 1" high 80 pin SCSI drive will fit, but you need the Dell drive tray to put it in.

If you already have drives in it, you can re-use the trays for new drives. However, SCSI drives are not cheap - you'll probably be able to buy an entire system with IDE drives for the cost of a few new 73GB SCSI drives.

I'd say your best bet is to look on e-bay for used drives - you can pick them up pretty cheaply there.

You can go to ebay and find some decent deals on scsi drives. A 146GB 15k.4 can go for as little as 400.

Thanks LegendKiller. I don't really need anything fancy, so I might try to track down some older 73GB or 146GB 10k rpm drives.

Basically, enough speed/capacity to function as a basic audio and/or video server.
