OK I know this is a stretch but does anyone on this board know which residency program is better when it comes to family medicine? And how much better is one from the other. The programs I'm interested in finding out is UCSF and Columbia. Thanks. It's a long and complicated story. Any help you guys can provide would be greatly appreciatred.

Wow. That is an OT question. Both are certainly nice schools, but I've no clue.
I'm just giving this a bump so any of the resident medico's on the board can give imput if they know.

UC Davis is very good. Probably top 5. I did my medical research at UCSF and that's not really directed towards FP

You sure about that Brain? Cause me gf and my med friends tell me that UCSF has a good residency program for family medicine. One of the oldest ones in the country.

my father is a GP, and he recommends you avoid the field like a plague. All the money has been sucked out of it and all you deal with is insurance and paperwork.
My dad loves being a doctor first and foremost the money is just a bonus. For him to say something like that really means something...
for your actual question i don't know man, sorry.

Both sound like good programs to me but US news ranks Columbia second (I don't know where they ranked UCSF because I don't have an account with them and they only showed the top three on the list) in 2005. That said, I personally don't take rankings all that seriously. IMO the most important things are 1) Geography. If you have an idea where you want to practice pick a residency near that area. 2) the vibe you get when you interview there (i.e. how hot the nurses are).
I PM'd you with a site that might be of help (not posted here because I'm not sure it would be appropriate to do so).

Is there a particular region you'd like to be? I agree that family practice is really a drag. Wife isn't overly joyous about the field.

*wonders if molec sent site saying where the country's hottest nursing students were*

Mayo. The past-time there for the nurses is to marry the doctors.

awww, dude... so sorry bout the breakup.
and which is "better" depends on what you want... i know people who have interviewed at both (nobody who actually did an FP residency at either) and they had differing opinions.
as for avoiding the field... i dunno. my husband certainly is, mostly because of the likely hours he'd have to put in vs radiology, which is more fun for him, too. but i have several friends in residency in FP and one who is practicing, and they like it just fine (and they're not poor either... though the one who's out of residency did marry an ophthamologist :P ) again, depends on what you want.
are you an M4? and did you interview at both? you still have a month before you have to turn your rankings in, so if you met any residents there, email them and ask em more questions... make another visit, if possible... if you haven't interviewed yet and have interviews scheduled, schedule an extra day, see if you can hook up with a resident or three for lunch, don't skip the pre-interview dinner, etc. if you know anyone from your school who matched at either place in previous years, just contact them, even if they didn't know you that well.
