so i'm looking to buy myself a new digital camera.... thinking about warranty... i have 3 choices...

1. buy dell's extended warranty
2. buy amazon's extended warranty
3. screw them both and just trust my amex coverage

what do you guys think?

Just go with the manufactuer warranty... I wouldn't bother with the extended warranty in this case.

Well, honestly... in "consumer electronics" you'll probably know whether it is good or bad within the first year of use.

I have a $900 Canon Rebel XT and I didn't buy the extended warranty on it... It just works. :D

I've had my Nikon Coolpix 800 digital camera for the past 8 years... with no problems. So honestly, I don't think digital cameras require them (not so many moving parts to matter.)

I'm gonna go with DF on this one. I've had 6 different digicams in the past 8 years or so, and I've never had an extended warranty on any of them (nor have I needed one).

I'd say rely on the Amex extended warranty, or if you're a member, buy one from Costco. Their return policy is better than any other store in the history of the known universe - if it breaks just return it with the receipt, get your money back & buy a new one. No time limit.

are you serious on that? no time limit?!?!?! if so... that extra $30 is way worth it...

Oh yeah. Best in the world. They limit desktops & laptops to a 6 month return window, I believe (because some idiots were abusing the system), but I don't think there's a time limit on anything else.

Costco's return policy is unheard of. They'll take just about anything back. I recently returned some shirts that were 3 years old, tags still on them. They took 'em back.

Also, check with your credit card company. Some will double the manufacturers warranty (for free) if you use them. So a one year warranty would double to two...just food for thought.

Extended warranties are still in effect for cars, major appliances and electronics. (like HDTVs, Big screen TVS, high end laptops, and other "high risk" electronics)

Not "consumer electronics" (like smaller tubed TVs, portable stereos, cd players, cameras, etc...)
