This guy completely threw McNabb under the bus. I just wonder if the same type of outrage will be exhibited as when Rush Limbaugh did the same thing.

I also found one quote from McNabb a bit puzzling, ""Obviously if it's someone else who is not African American, it's racism. But when someone of the same race talks about you because you're selling out because you're not running the ball, it goes back to: What are we really talking about here?"

So because this guy is black, making comments about black quarterbacks having to run the ball because they are black quarterbacks isn't a racist comment?

He threw him under, got in, and drove the bus over him. Completely uncalled for. It's about time people cut McNabb some slack and realize he's a hell of a competitor and player.

I wondered the exact same thing...I guess it's only racist if a white guy says it (sounds about par for the course, though). :gle:

Donovan McNabb is still taking shots -- the latest from an NAACP leader who criticized the Philadelphia Eagles quarterback's leadership skills and said he "played the race card" in explaining why he no longer runs the ball.

“If you talk about my play, that's one thing. When you talk about my race, now we've got problems. If you're trying to make a name off my name, again, I hope your closet is clean because something is going to come out about you ... I always thought the NAACP supported African Americans and didn't talk bad about them. Now you learn a little bit more.”
I agree with McNabb here. Shame on Mondesire. :nono:

Mondesire wrote that McNabb shares the blame for Owens' departure.
Owens is the only one to blame for his departure.

i've been dying to post this story but didn't want it to be another "cheapie posts about another african-american" post.

i'm not sure i even understand the guy's position. is he essentially saying that if donovan was white, he would use his scrambling abilities but doesn't want to do so not because it would perpetuate the stereotype of black quarterbacks? i happen to agree that mcnabb is an average qb but it has nothing to do with race. i think he's better in the pocket because when he scrambles, his sack numbers skyrocket.

also, has this guy seen how banged up mcnabb is? would he like to scramble and get hit more often when he's been beat to sh$t?

Wow taking shots at McNabb is a very popular thing to do when the Eagles are down and out huh....well ANy QB for that matter.....

So the NCAAP calls him a racists for not running or something lame like that....and some other papers in Philly are calling him an Uncle Tom (White writers from what I heard) for not standing up to "the Man" like TO did (who they called a "real" African American...?)

It just really goes to show that when you win no body cares about anything, but when you lose they will stab you in the back.

So is Michael Vick racists? He didn't run for awhile too......

why would he stand up to management? he didn't have any beef with them. are they saying he should have supported TO merely because they are the same race?

The way I read it I thought that McNabb brought up a good point. It doesn't sound like he's saying because he's Black he's not a racist, but rather, can a Black guy be racist against another Black guy? Can someone be racist about their own race? We have discussed this here at G|A before and my answer is yes, a person can be racist against their own race. This is a good subject that the media should cover, and so I am glad that somebody is being forced to ask it, which in this case it is McNabb.

My thought is that based on that ESPN article, that Mondesire is right. McNabb shouldn't have pulled the race card to explain why he doesn't scramble anymore. I haven't read the whole Mondesire article but discussing race does not automatically make it a racist statement, but when attributing actions/traits to race is when it does. The brief statements referenced by the ESPN article to Mondesire's article do not appear to be racist, in my opinion. They are harsh and very critical of his leadership abilities, but not racist.

As many of you have said it is unfortunate that McNabb is getting so much crap this year. I don't believe that he deserves the harsh criticism that he is getting.

good for him.

PHILADELPHIA (AP) -- The chief executive officer of the NAACP criticized the president of its Philadelphia branch Thursday for racially charged comments made about Eagles quarterback Donovan McNabb.

Bruce Gordon, who heads the Baltimore-based National Association for the Advancement of Colored People, issued a statement calling McNabb "a great quarterback, an excellent role model and a class act" and said he intended to apologize for denigrating remarks made by Philadelphia chapter president J. Whyatt Mondesire.

"The NAACP has many civil rights issues that require our attention," Gordon said. "Criticizing Donovan McNabb is not one of them."

Mondesire, who also publishes the Philadelphia Sunday Sun, criticized the quarterback's proclivity for passing in a Dec. 4 newspaper column.

He wrote that McNabb's tendency to run the ball early in his career "not only confused defenses, it also thrilled Eagles fans," and that abandoning that element "by claiming that 'everybody expects black quarterbacks to scramble' not only amounts to a breach of faith but also belittles the real struggles of black athletes who've had to overcome real racial stereotypcasting in addition to downright segregation."

Mondesire said Thursday he was not speaking in his capacity as a branch leader.

"This has nothing to do with the NAACP. It's my opinion," he said.

McNabb could not be reached for comment Thursday, but said last weekend that "I always thought the NAACP supported African Americans and didn't talk bad about them."

"If you talk about my play, that's one thing," McNabb said. "When you talk about my race, now we've got problems."

This is some of the most confusing reading I've done in a while. Here is the original article: http://www.philasun.com/back_issues/2005/11-27-05/cover.html

I'm not sure if he's just a pissed off Eagles fan (Lord knows there are enough of them) who happens to be the head of the NAACP in Philly, or if he really believes that McNabb's performance is a race issue.

What's really funny is that he tries to compare McNabb to Doug Williams: the below average QB who happened to win a Super Bowl on a team with a suffocating defense.

Carrer numbers for Williams: http://www.pro-football-reference.com/players/WillDo01.htm
Career numbers for McNabb: http://www.pro-football-reference.com/players/McNaDo00.htm

You do the math.

To me it sounds like the guy used his NAACP status to beat McNabb down because he is a PO'd philly fan. The stats aren't really comparable, McNabb has done a lot more.

mcnabb is a average to above-average qb...

I've heard he has very good leadership skills. One of the reasons that he and TO couldn't get along, McNabb hates players that shine light on themselves at the team's expense.

This guy is an idiot... so he has two jobs... Head of Philly NCAAP and a writer for the Sun.... umm people will be watching what you say when you hold a position like that. Everything you do will reflect on yoru status as head of the Philly NCAAP. So stating that it was outside of your realm as head of the NCAAP Philly branch is lame. We do not live in bubbles :)

I think you missed him backing the bus over him too. :P I do agree with you, though.
