OK all I know this has been discussed in general, but I want some opinions. I have had bad luck with printers over the last few years. We are considering buying the Canon Pixma MP800 which has been getting rave reviews. The printer is about 300 bucks with tax and shipping. There is a 3 year extended warranty for about 60 bucks. Is it worth it? All opinions welcome?

I personally say no myself.

I wouldn't buy it.

If you do make sure it's for a full replacement and not repair. Also remember that in 3 years that printer won't be made anymore, so make sure if you do get the warranty, that they will replace it with the next higher model. Make sure it says all that in writing.

Nope...

Printers just work... You'll know if it is broken within the manufacturer's warranty period.

Just a waste of cash to buy an extended warranty there.

For a Laptop or large screen TV I would say to get the warranty. But for a printer... no.

Do you have a Costco where you live? You can buy it there and have a lifetime warranty for free.

I usually wouldn’t buy a warranty for a 300.00 item, usually if they work for the first 30 days it will work for a long time. However I just bought a warranty for a 40 dollar item, the odds of this cheap Chinese made power tool breaking is pretty high and it was only 5 bucks, also if it breaks I can take it to the local hardware store for an instant replacement. I would say if your worried about it breaking I would consider the cost of the warranty and what it covers and the company offering it. Local in store replacements are nice. Keep in mind that depending on a small online company to honor a warranty, can end up to be more of a hassle than its worth.
my 2 cents

Yeah I belong to Costco but they don't carry it. They did on line as of yesterday but now today it is gone from their online store. I was going to do that but I did not pull the trigger. I am :bash:my head. I will probably buy from newegg they are the chepest. I just had to throw away a 1.5 year old epson R300 which had to replaced under warranty once and it still failed. I am tried of spending the money to get crap. I probably won't get the warranty or wait to get one at costco.

Buy with your AMEX card and get an extended warranty for free.

I don't have a costco around here, but I was looking at their website, and it kind of freaked me out. Am I the only one that's never seen "Urns and Caskets" as a menu selection at the top of the page? :eek3:

I ususally won't buy an extended warranty...but from my experience at "an office supply store" for 6 years...the extended warranty covered anything if you complained loud enough.

You didn't even have to call the number on the warranty...you just had to bring in your purchase with the receipt and extended warranty papers into a store and complain. They'd give you the same thing, best same-price replacement, or gift card with value of purchase.

If you want to get technical though...the extended warranty doesn't cover crap. It doesn't cover anything past the thing just blowing up on its own....yet we let customers who dropped stuff, fried stuff, broke stuff, etc. bring their stuff back.

So think about it...whatever that's worth to ya. :D

Inkjet printers did not work very well for me since I do not print with them very often (I print pictures at a drugstore where it costs me less than paper and ink) and went with a color laser printer since it won't clog or dry up from not being used. which I got for a bit over $300 on a deal from Dell. And I will add my name to those saying no to extended warranties. I have Mastercard which used to give you up to one year extra warranty, but they dropped it.

Moe: (shoving crayon up nose deeper and deeper) All right, tell me when I hit the sweet spot.
Homer: Deeper, you pusillanimous pilsner-pusher.
Moe: All right, all right.
Homer: DEFENSE! Grunt! Grunt! DEFENSE! Grunt! Grunt!
Moe: That's pretty dumb... but... uh...
Homer: Extended warranty? How can I lose?
Moe: Perfect.

exactly what I was thinking!

anyway, to the topic, i bought a canon mp730 a couple years ago and now have realized that parts of my printhead is jammed. as such, i shelled out for a genuine canon unit for ~50 bucks. seeing as the printhead is really the only thing that can potentially go "wrong" on a unit like this, and the cost of the replacement part undercuts the warranty, i'd pass.

good point. if it goes kaput during it's extended warranty time, go to ebay and get a used one for cheaper.
That's what I've been doing with my parents dotmatrix printer for their store.
