After their New Orleans warehouse was flattened by Hurricane Katrina on Aug. 29, principals at Confederate Motor Co. Inc. decided to relocate. They toured more than a dozen cities including Atlanta, Austin, and Dallas. Their choice? Birmingham.
The company further solidified its commitment to the Magic City by incorporating a new holding company called Birmingham Speed of America Inc. to serve as Confederate's parent company.
The maker of Confederate Motorcycles announced today it is moving its headquarters to Southside, into an 8,500-square-foot building at 2222 Fifth Ave. South. It is an emerging area, with venue WorkPlay (http://www.workplay.com/wp.asp) across the street and a $10 million condo project called LivWorkPlay planned in the same block.
Among lifestyle factors that sold the company on Birmingham were its selection of great food and the hot loft market. Even more important, company officials say, was the Barber Motorsports Park (http://www.barbermotorsports.com/)and Museum (http://www.barbermuseum.org/), with its remarkable collection of vintage bikes.
"We knew about George Barber and his consummate passion for motorcycling," said Confederate founder and managing director Matt Chambers in a prepared statement. "But we didn't expect to find such an incredible level of professionalism coupled with such incredible hospitality. Mr. Barber and his team are dedicated to making things happen in Alabama in economic development, and it's not just talk -- they have a strong background and solid proof that their efforts are working."
Confederate makes the Hellcat and Wraith motorcycles and lists several celebrities among its customer base. Birmingham production is expected to start in January 2006 on the bikes, which range from $55,000 to $67,500.
Production goals for 2006 call for 150 of the hand-crafted cycles, a figure the company expects to double in 2007.
Former Baton Rouge lawyer Chambers founded his company in 1991.
Tom Cruise and Brad Pitt are Confederate owners.
