"The Padres pulled off a big trade with the Rangers on Tuesday, acquiring right-hander Chris Young, first baseman Adrian Gonzalez and outfielder Terrmel Sledge and sending righties Adam Eaton and Akinori Otsuka and a Minor Leaguer to Texas." www.padres.com

Now I'll be the first to admit, i'm not a huge baseball fan, but I followed the Padres pretty closely last season. Being that I really don't have a good feel for which players are good (besides the big names), are these players from the Rangers any good? Eaton was our #2 picture and Akinori was a pretty decent reliever too!

Esdee! Shed some light on this for me.

Hmm I'm not too sure about Chris Young I'll have to find out more about him. From what I have read about Gonzalez and Sledge it sounds like they are good pickups. Giving up Eaton was a lot though, but Otsuka leaving wasn't the worst thing ever. I'll have to listen to the wire to figure out what the experts are saying.

The Padres seem to develop good pichers and then trade them. They have certainly been very busy this off season! One of the things that makes it harder for me (and probably many other people) to get excited about the sport is that the players move around so much. You don't develop any relationship with players- have any favorites. Tony Gwynns and Trevor Hoffmans are a dying breed in baseball.

Eaton and the organization were 10 million apart on their negotiations.

Yes, the Padres offered him $17 million over three years, and he anted $27 million. So, adios.

IMO, just talent for talent, horrible trade. Sledge is a marginal player. was horrible with the nationals, and will be horrible with SD.
Adrian Gonzalez, highly touted prospect a few years ago, has done very little in the majors. He's a platoon 1bman at best. And Chris young, if the pitching starved rangers are trading him...well, tells ya something.

on the other hand, Eaton, did pretty well, has good stuff.
Otsuka has been one of the best middle relievers in baseball.
and not sure about the prospect.

I think it's a horrible trade for the pads. they could've gotten a lot more for eaton and otsuka.

The Padres tear apart the team after any year they make the playoffs. They did in 1999, and they have done it again. I really don't know why they kept Hoffman, if they were planning on puttiing a losing team on the field.

Poor trades and poor management have become the trademarks of the Padres.
