So I was supposed to go home to Oregon for Christmas yesterday... My flight left at 6:00AM as it usually does, but alas, my POS alarm didn't go off. When I woke up, it was already 7:15...

No problem, I'll just rebook for the next day. I'll have to pay the $100 change fee and I'll lose a day at home, but s*it happens...

So I call up United and try and rebook. Nothing the rest of the 21st going out, but I can get out Thurs. morning. It'll only cost me $450 in addition to the $275 I already paid. F*ck. Allright, I'll bite the bullet. It's only $ after all.

So I get up this morning, way ahead of schedule. The drive to the airport is an hour and a half, so I leave 2:45 ahead of when my flight leaves at 8:50AM.

Hey, guess what. There's a wicked accident on the freeway about 15 miles outside of the airport. No biggie, I have almost an hour and a half to get there.

.

.

.

I sat in traffic for over an hour. I finally got to the airport at 8:25AM. I figure I'm still good, as my member status lets me zip through the check-in and security lines. I get to the counter, tell the lady I'm late, and where I'm going and she ever so politely says...

"Sorry hun, that flight left at 8:20."

I reply, something along the lines of... "Uh... my confirmation says 8:48 right here. WTF mate?"

"They moved it up last night... you didn't get the phone call?"

Not a thing. Never left the house yesterday. No call, no nothing. Bastards.

Ok, so I get booked on a flight to Chicago at 10:30. Puts me into ORD around 12:00 local. But alas, no flights to Portland open currently. So now, I'm on standby in Chicago with no estimated time of departure.

I cannot explain how I feel right now... I'm not really angry, just mad I can't get home to see my family.

I am sorry about that, Dear Irish. Best of times come some years and worst of times on others. Maybe your streak will end soon. We love you.

Damn...well look on the bright side....the weather in most of Oregon looks kind of bad right now. (Although, I should confess that I only caught a glimpse of the weather forecast this morning. I just remember thinking...looks like Portland and Medford are in for some bad weather.)

Hopefully its just delays not getting stuck another day. I would definitely call the airline and complain about the lack of call! That is completely unacceptable.

Ah, memories. I know exactly how you feel. Years ago I got to the airport for my flight home for Christmas from BFIndiana. Turns out the agent had booked me a flight out of West Lafayette, Louisiana, not West Lafayette, Indiana. They didn't have any openings flying out until after Christmas, days later. I made a bunch of calls to every person I knew, and ended up hitching a ride to Indianapolis in the back seat of a Geo Storm that was already full with 4 guys. Spent 90 minutes in the fetal position cursing travel agents and life in general. Good luck getting home.

Just a little liquid sunshine, as we like to call it.

Although this temperature inversion is messing up all the snow on Mt Hood :splat:

Not to mention all the snow in the Sierras that is 45 minutes from my parents' house in No. California.

I checked the conditions on Donner Summit and it was 46 degrees and raining at 6500' :splat:

Man, some days you're the pigeon, some days you're the statue. That is without a doubt a statue day.

Thanks for all the well wishes...

I actually did make the 3:00PM out of ORD to PDX. I was the last person on standby to make it on.. and oddly enough, I know my mileage plus status should have put me right at the top or very near it on the waitlist.

Only one bad thing to note... there was a small child (maybe 18 mths) literally screaming for his life the entire 4.5 hr flight out. He just happened to be seated directly in front of me. Even the Bose noise-cancelling cans couldn't drown him out, although they did help immensely.

But whatever... it's all in the past. I'm here now, it's not raining for a brief moment and I'm still going to the Fiesta Bowl in 10 or so days!

Good to hear you got home. I was at ORD yesterday too, paying an arm and a leg for a QPC and Coke in the terminal. Home for the holidays really means something to me now.
