Anyone have a rational idea of how much it might cost to replace a transmission on a 91 300SL.....and replace the roof mechanism.....and the roof mechanism button....and the guages....as well as a number of mystery leaks?
Long story short....we have a 91 300sl that has been dying a slow painful death for a long time. We are the original owners on the car and personally, I think it has character and would like to keep it. Of course, it doesnt make sense to sink $9000 into a car that isnt worth $9000. My father had the interior completely replaced/repaired as well as the exterior and roof two years ago. Unfortunately, about six months after the repair the tranny started to give way. At times the car will not reverse at all and requires a flinstone.
My dad just picked up a new SL and as such doesnt need to have 2 convertibles when one is in this condition. He was debating on repairing it vs. selling it as is. His mechanic tried to convince him that it was worth nothing and then a few minutes later mentioned that he could probably get at least 3 grand for it.
I looked it up on KBB and edmunds and depending on site, the car ranges from just about $4k to $7k, wholesale. At this point, the question becomes how much the car can actually be fixed for as I am going to be in town for several extended periods of time in the near future. Plus, I have always loved this one.
