Can't open command prompt

On my Windows XP Service Pack 2 machine, I cannot seem to open the command prompt (Start > Run > "cmd"). It brings up the prompt for a second, and then it disappears.

I've tried running Trend Micro's online virus scanner, and I've run a few spyware scans and can't find the culprit.

Any ideas?

Figured it out.

I apparently DID have a virus, but the online virus scanner fixed it without deleting the file cmd.com (the regular command-prompt is cmd.exe).

I had the same virus. You should also check your netstat.com ipconfig.com and i think there are one or two more .com files that are acting as the .exe ones.

I can't think of them right now.. If I find the article about this virus, I'll post it.

interesting ... does the virus do anything harmful besides the annoyance?
