Okay~~ I build another gig this weekend, using the gifts I recieved on Xmas. Installed XP, updated SP1 and SP2, updated the drivers
I got a Seagate 300GB Ultra ATA 100, 7200 rpm, 16mb cache
I recovered the lost GB by using the disk in the box (DiscWizard)
but I can't partition any of it
I asked my friend, he said, after I installed the OS i can't partition anymore. The only way to partition from now on, is to reinstall windows
HELP!! Is that true?? Took me so long to finish the updates. I don't want it all to go to waste :(

HELP!!

Partition Magic will do the trick.
There are also some free non destructive partition tools out there, but I haven't used them before.

Yeah, as Jcranmer said - Partition Magic will do it (I've done it before several times).
I dunno if there's any freeware out there that will do it, but...yep...Partition Magic will work. I'm not sure if a demo (http://www.soft32.com/download_151.html) of it will let you do the resizing (ie if the demo is restricted/crippled in any way) but, it's worth a shot I guess. Just make sure to make a set of rescue boot disks; you'll need 2 floppies. One time I did a resizing and it didn't 'take' and my computer wouldn't boot...and I didn't have the rescue discs and I was SOL (had to completely reformat/reinstall everything). :throw:

Thank you Zero2dash, I just downloaded the demo version
I will now partition my HDD, if you guys see me posting in an hour or so, that means it went good without an hiccup, if you see me posting in 5, then you know.....
wish me luck
ps any advice for 1st time partitioner?

Spend the money on Partition Magic.
That is the best advice I can think of. It's worth it.

A very good free tool is Ranish Partition Manager (http://www.ranish.com/part/).

but its so expensive, for 69.99
(don't forget, I'm cheap)
anyhoo.. the demo version doesn't work, it can't do any partitioning, only demo to show you how it would have been done :(
anyway to get it cheap?

Try Ranish. I've heard people say that it can do everything that Partition Magic can, but for free.

If I recall correctly, PartitionMagic (nor any 3rd-party partitioning program) will work. Those special utilties that enable high-capacity drives to work on older systems use a custom MBR that renders tools like PM useless.
(At least that's how it was several years ago).

That went by the wayside with XP and up to date hardware.
Partition Magoic is $70 at Outpost.com but it has a $40 rebate. And another $20 rebate if you have a competitive product upgrade, but if you had a competing product you wouldn't need it
So, $30 after rebate. Is that more pallatable?.
