I am in the market for a new serial hard drive. I want the best/fastest drive I can get. Which would that be, like one of the 74gb raptors? Please let me know! thanks

if you're looking for fast. you would be correct in going for the SATA raptors. but to add on to it...I would bust 2 of those raptors and raid those monkeys!!!

Why are people so hung up on RAID setups? :)
Knowing that if one drive goes bad, I could lose everything - I refuse to RAID anything.

:agree:

I refuse to RAID anything in my box... and I have Ghost to perform my redundant backups. :D

Had a raid setup a few years ago and it went caput. Never again. Besides I didn't really see that much of a performance boost. A little one but now worth the trouble or risk.

Same reason that some people prefer chocolate over vanilla.

To add balance to the thread, I have run RAID 0 (2x80 and 3x80) arrays in my gaming and video editting machines for years with not a single hitch. I suspect that many of the problems people have with arrays and hard drives in general is heat. I've also never had a HD fail on me, because (I conclude) I place them in the input airstream.

.................

BTW: I don't currently run a RAID array, because my gaming comps and video editting comps both have 16MB 250GB Maxtor's in them, giving me more than enough space for what I do. That, and the only thing I really have to wait for (game loading) doesn't really speed up with a RAID array.

The fastest drive should be the WD Raptor 150 which is rumored to be released in January.
Raid 0 will not get you any benifits with the curent generation of drives, unless you will be using the computer primarily for video editing.

Best bet currently is to go with two drives.
WD Raptor 74GB for the OS
Seagate SATA 250mb or 300GB 16mb cache for the aplications and data.

This combination will allow your system to run quickly off the OS drive and not bottleneck the OS with read/writes from the aplications.

ah yes, I forget which raid setup this is, but it requires 4 hdd. It splits and mirrors the info over the hdds, SO, if one fails, or even hdd fails, the system will still be able to work. it's pretty nice.

4 RAID hd vs 1 or 2 regular :)
gee which do I choose :heh:
IMHO the risks of RAID and the outstanding price make it not even a choice I'm willing to make...I'd rather spend the extra money on a new cpu, vid card, ram, etc. *something* else that is more likely to show a performance boost.

/me in my non-RAID stubborn ways :)
