My cat loves me unconditionally.... I give her a 10.
She greets me at the door when I come home.... she curls up in my lap when I watch TV, tries to sleep on the bed at bedtime and finds all kinds of time in between to nuzzle up to me.

10+
I have a golden retriever, dogs notorious for their affection.
He loves me, the UPS guy, the vet that pokes him with needles, any random stranger, little kids that yank his tail, the groomer, etc...

Last pet I had was a cat. I give it a 1.
I would go lower, but the scale bottoms out there. It was psychotic. I don't mean that it was troublesome. I mean that it was really mentaly ill. One moment it was a normal cat, the next it was a raging psychopath. No reason, no triggers, it just happened. As the cat attacked for no reason I wanted to put it down, but instead it was given back to the previous owner. Who had to put it down after it ran throught a pet door into a neigbors house and killed a cat 2x it's size in front of that cat's family.
The cat I had previous to that one thought it was a racoon. It gets a 9.
It would frequently chase the neighbor's full sized german shepard that barked and growled at me. It wasn't particulary affectionate. It only liked to be petted and sit on laps occationaly and for short periods, but it was very protective.

I'll give my pup an 11..only because she is the greatest dog that has ever lived..she's smart, soft, and is ALWAYS next to me..grinning. She's pretty damn happy and that keeps me happy too. She knows how to count and shake her head yes and no and a bunch of other things.. unfortunately she's old now. And I'm afraid this may be my last year with her.
The new dog..well he's a bad boy turned sweetie-he thinks he's the boss of the house and likes to sleep on the foot of my bed..when he thinks I"m not looking, he tries to put his head on my pillows and he gets yelled at...he's the holiest dog I know too..so far this season, he's eaten all three wisemen, two camels, a cow, and one sheep out of one of my manger sets. I got to him before baby Jesus became dinner. I still love him-he's a great watch dog. And the combination of the two dogs together-keep me pretty darn safe at night. (so he gets an 8)

My dog is a stupid ****, but he's by far the most loyal pet anyone could own... unless of course you want him to do something like..
sit... or... stop licking my face... or... get the **** off me, I'm trying to sleep.
lots of ........'s
Noah gets a 14 because he's the ****, and the only one who hasnt gone nutts back home ;)
/edit: It was insisted that I mention the part about Noah humping some kid while he was sleeping.... yes, Scott, we have pictures.

you are lucky to have such a nice cat. our cats we had growing up weren't all that affectionate.
She's an American shorthair.... and she's kept her "kitten-like" ways even though she is almost 2 years old now.
Yes, I can say that I was lucky to get her.... however I fully believe that how you treat a cat as a kitten will determine how they turn out as a grown cat. And yes... some breeds of cats have a natural "pissed off" nature (like Siamese). I've been there before.
The big thing about my kitty is... she chose me. She showed up one day when I was outside changin' the oil in the HEMI... and she decided to stay. Personally, I'm glad that she did. :D

3 cats and a dog, i'd give out 2 10's and a 8 to the cats, and a 10 to the dog.

10+ for my wiener. It is with me where ever I go. It is very affectionate, and I kid you not when I say that women just love petting/stroking my wiener. I had some company over today and they couldn't get enough of it.

I will agree with your summation, but there are exceptions. The Apple Head Siamese that I had when I was growing up was the most loyal animal that I have ever owned. Pretty much fit the exact description that you gave your cat.
We currently have 2 domestic medium hair cats that we have had since they were around 8 weeks old. The male "Doof" is super loyal and loves to be around my wife and I. The female "Dolly" is loyal, but has a bit of prissiness which is somewhat common among some female cats. Overall I would give them a combined rating of 9.

We have 4 cats...all of them are 10s but for different reasons.
Elizabeth (the youngest @ 3y/o) is really sweet when she's nice but really mean when she's playing. She'll attack your leg for telling her to 'move' if she's walking in front of you and you need to get by. I still have scars on my hands from her claws/playing with her. :) (We got her right after we moved in together so technically she's 'our' cat.)
Jasmine (Val's younger cat), is like 7. She's a really really sweet cat, almost to the point of annoyance. She always wants to sit in your lap or be petted, but she's a doll. If she gets mad at you (for patting her head too hard, for instance), she bites really really frickin' hard. Her only other problem (and a BIG one) is that she takes the most stinky craps that I've ever experienced. I mean FARRRRRRRRRR worse than a human. And she eats the same food as all of the other cats! Val says she's always had stinky poo. :heh:
Scully (my cat, named after the X-Files character) will be 10 this year. She's a sweet cat to me but she hates anyone and anything else (she seems to do ok with small dogs but she hates other cats). We have to keep her in a room separate from the other cats otherwise she picks fights with all of them. The only other problem with her is that she doesn't bury her poo so she stinks too. :)
Biff (Val's cat, aka Uncle Boo 'cause he used to hide all the time, like the guy from the book "To Kill A Mockingbird" - Boo Radley) is like 16 or 17 y/o and he's a really sweet cat too but he pukes up his food a lot and he's also recently started peeing on the carpet if the litter box is too dirty for him or he's just too lazy to go use it. No, in all seriousness...I know that as cats get older, their bladders get smaller so I'm sure that's why. He's a sweet cat though.
Our cats all have distinct personalities and whatnot but they're all great animals and all 10s in my book. :thumb: I love cats.

All dogs are naturally 10, and all cats are naturally 1.
Some cats that live in houses and pretend to be domesticated can climb the ladder to a 4 or a 5, but it's rare.
Some dogs, especially Terriers, are really more like cats than dogs, and sink down to a 4 or a 5. Mean dogs are almost always the fault of the owner, and shouldn't be considered.
Mean cats... well that's kind of redundant, isn't it?
(Ha ha - just kidding, you cat lovers!)

"Barbed-wire love" from my ex-girls samoyed. That dog was crazy (in a charming funny way) and liked to wrestle, play bite and get his big long-nailed paws into me.
