Bryant suspended for two games for elbowing Memphis' Miller in throat

December 30, 2005

Kobe Bryant was suspended for two games without pay Friday for elbowing Mike Miller in the throat.

During Wednesday's 101-99 loss to Memphis, the Lakers guard was called for a flagrant foul with 8:24 to play for elbowing Miller.

After the game, Bryant was unapologetic. He had been gashed over his left eye in the second quarter when Miller pushed him in the face with his hand; the cut required three stitches.

"Any player that was going to come down the lane at that point in time, I was going to let him know that he just can't walk through there," Bryant said. "I think we as a team have to do a better job of establishing that. And me, as a leader of the ballclub, I've got to take the initiative to do that -- and hopefully, everybody will see that.

"This being our home court, people come here and think it's Hollywood and all sorts of stuff, so they think they'll come down (the lane) and look pretty and shoot jump shots and dunk the ball and finger-roll the ball and do all sorts of cute stuff. And we've got to stop that."

Bryant is scheduled to serve his suspension Sunday, when the Lakers host Utah, and Tuesday, when Los Angeles plays at the Jazz.

There was report that he almost got in a fight with Odom after the loss in D.C.

I swore Odom was phoning it in during that Christmas day game. Now I'm convinced. I think he's just not trying because he can't stand Kobe. Odom is way better than he's playing. I hope he keeps tanking it and the Lakers send him back to us for Antoine. :)

I have no problem with the NBA suspending Kobe for the 2 games. That was a punk move giving a cheap shot to Miller. When Kobe got hit by Miller that was just an accident. The problem I do have is if they are going to suspend Kobe, why not suspend Josh Howard for going upside Kobe's head intentionally when he dropped the 62 on the Mavs. Howard didn't make a play for the ball.

one game to go? we need Odom to shoot a lot more than he did. if he doesnt start shooting (his assists and rebounds are nice.. but only 18 without kobe isnt) more lakers are doomed...doomed i say

As in one game left in the suspension... I know the rest of the players need to improve too!

completely agree. kobe deserves that suspension... but so does josh howard.

and to address the odom vs. kobe rumors...the media loves nothing more than to jump at the chance for any rumors about another laker infighting, especially if it involves kobe. it's not surprising that they would blow this out of proportion. there were heated words, yes, but nothing more. kobe, phil, and the rest of the lakers were pissed at that one loss and so stuff had to be said. magic would do it...jordan would do it... but when kobe says anything, it's automatically taken as being arrogant and egotistic.

The solution to any in-fighting, dirt digging by the media, etc...WINNING.

Yeah Kobe is a player some love or love to hate, but until the Lakers consistently win, no one will care except the media and the reporters will harp on anything to get headlines.

So how is Shaq doing, while we're on the subject? Sorry, I haven't been following NBA as much real close due to a baby on the way. Forgive this humble San Diegan sports fanatic.

So how is Shaq doing, while we're on the subject?

you mustv missed the whole xmas day lakers vs. miami game.... shaq ignoring/dissing kobe.. shaq and odom....shaq and wade beating the lakers

shaq is doing well this year after he came back from a sprained ankle. He is not as awesome as he used to be, but still the best center in the league... Lakers need him back (good luck with that one)
