Found this elsewhere, apparently, it's a new system pull, and pretty cheap at that. $6 shipping for UPS Ground, $9 for 2nd Day Air...AND REGION FREE! (with upgraded firmware, I believe)... I ordered myself one...

Yes, decoding isn't done by the drive, so you either get software that does it, which eats your CPU, or you get a dedicated card to do this for you. Some video cards actually have this built in, depends ont he card. This is nothing new, or unusual.

Exactly, there's no such thing as a DVD-ROM drive that doesn't require either/or, duh.

I bought this on Thursday night, at $59. Sent them an e-mail when it went to $51 and got this nice note:
