the external hdd is powered and i can see the firewire drivers properly installed in windows hardware, but i guess i just dont know how to acess the external hdd. thanks for your help.

Is the drive partitioned? If it's a new drive, click Start > Run, and type "diskmgmt.msc"
This will open up the Disk Management screen, which will let you format and partition the drive.

so i finally got the external hdd to show in disk management. the external hdd isnt new, its my friends and i wanted to transfer from data over on it. since the hdd is unallocated, it asks me to partition the drive. if i do so, would i lose any data? if so, how would i go about not partitioning it so that i can access the data? thanks.

That's odd -- if Disk management isn't showing any partitions, than something is really messed up.
DON'T repartition the drive if there was data on it previously. I'd recommend trying it in your friend's computer again to see if it recognizes the drive.

That makes all the difference -- IIRC, Macs use a file system called HPFS (High Performance File System) which

ic. does that mean there is no way that i can access the data on the external hdd?
