Back to the "Futurama"?

By Gina Serpe Wed Jan 4, 7:44 PM ET

What has Stewie Griffin wrought? How about a Bender rebirth?

Following the hugely successful resurrection of Family Guy, Fox execs are reportedly in talks to bring Futurama back from the dead.

The studio has begun talks to revive the Emmy-winning animated series and produce a limited number of new episodes, thanks to a resurgence in the show's popularity on DVD and in reruns, Variety reports.

Reps for 20th Century Fox have declined to comment on the news, but Variety says initial negotiations have begun.

If revived, it's unclear exactly which network would air the new episodes. While Fox housed the original series, the show found new life once reruns began showing on the Cartoon Network. Comedy Central subsequently snapped up the off-air rights and will exclusively air the repeats beginning in 2008.

The brainchild of Simpsons mastermind Matt Groening and writer David X. Cohen, Futurama debuted on Fox in March 1999. The series revolved around Fry, a pizza delivery boy, who is accidentally frozen for a thousand years. He wakes up in the year 3000 and befriends sassy one-eyed pilot Leela and cranky robot Bender, who both work for an intergalactic delivery service run by a distant nephew of Fry's.

After five seasons and three Emmys, including the 2002 prize for Best Animated Series, Futurama was shuttered in August 2003.

Should the show make its way back to the airwaves, it would follow in the footsteps of another Fox cult 'toon, Family Guy.

The latter show was brought back in 2004, thanks to robust rerun ratings and staggeringly high DVD sales--the show ranks as the fourth-biggest TV-series seller ever. Since its comeback, Fox has produced two more seasons and the direct-to-DVD movie Stewie Griffin: The Untold Story.

For Futurama to return, the studio would need to re-sign the show's production team, as well as voice stars Billy West,
Katey Sagal and John DiMaggio.

In the meantime, Futurama lives on in comic-book form, with all-new stories continuing to be released by Groening's Bongo Comics.

I liked the show and glad to see it's coming back. I think there's hope for Firefly also. I bet it's all the crappy shows of late and the DVD sales that are responsible for these resurrections. Freaks and Geeks in the future?

It almost seems like its a "strategy" now to cancel a show and see if its popularity continues or increases.

I didn't like Futurama when it was on, but the more I see it on Cartoon network (it's on my Tivo season pass and I've caught at least 5 loops, where they showed all the episodes start to finish in order) the more I love it.

Family Guy is more witty and edgy. It has it's ho-hum episodes but it's better than what The Simpsons have brought out these past few years. Futurama is funny but in a more ha-ha ok next scene way.

:stupid: Family Guy's humor is more often based on shock value, like the early years of South Park. And the Simpsons has gone so far downhill, I don't even watch anymore.

I was never that into Futurama when it was on, mostly because they kept switching time slots, but I got the DVDs and I loved them.

I kinda liked that show. I would watch it when I caught it, but now I will only watch if the kids are in bed but still it was a funny show.

I don't really like Futurama, but Fox is obviously filled with idiots if all they do (apparently) is cancel shows and then bring them back. It's bad enough the first time (Family Guy), but now it's just blatantly ignorant. Adult Swim keeps joking about Arrested Development being canceled and "maybe we should pick it up too...now back to more Family Guy" and I don't blame them. Fox needs to ease up on the "cancellation" button. :shifty:

I hope somebody else picks up Arrested Development. I was late catching on to that show, but it's really funny.

I like the conceptual idea of fans sending in money to a common production company, owning shares of a project, and developing a TV show or movie for DVD release outside of the standard fare of network television.

This was the idea behind some people's efforts with trying to save Enterprise last year, but oh well.
