There are lots of web sites around with info on how to prepare for a Marathon. Most have what to do 6 months out, 3 months out, etc.

lotsa water, pasta and carbs to build upp energy stores, the more running you do to prep the better - enjoy and good luck

Oooh - taking the plunge, huh? Good luck!

6 months should be plenty of time for you to train since you're already pretty active. Are you setting a time goal, or just trying to finish? Training would be slightly different if you want to beat a particular time.

If I were crazy enough to try that's what I would do.
But I wouldn't do it. I would die.

that's a good way to put it. i'm active. not in good shape. just active.

i'd like to beat 4:30. my friends did it in around 4. however, as long as i finish i'll be happy. i'm worried about a couple things. my 300 mile bike ride is 2 months before and i don't want to be hurting from that. and i have a bike race 2 weeks after the marathon and i want to do well in it.

What about your knee problems? You know that is going to get seriously aggravated with 26.2 miles of pounding.

thanks for remembering. the knee is really only bothered by biking so i'm not sure. i'm trying some new pedals and hopefully that, in combination with riding at a lighter weight, will reduce the knee wear and tear.

Accept the fact that life is pain so the pain that you are going to be feeling before, during, and after is just a good reminder that your heart hasn't given out on you yet... unless the pain is chest pain. :P

Seriously though, good luck and have fun.

If you're interested, I have an awesome training program that's probably perfect for you. It only requires three days of running per week (it's just at a faster pace), and I used it for half-marathon training. It made a huge improvement in my endurance.

PM me if you want to know more about it...or I could just post it here if others want the info.

Instead of running around downtown Chicago, run 21.9 miles due west. That will put you very near my house. Give a call - I'd be willing to drive you back downtown. ;)

You are an animal Cheapie! As you are probably aware, running and biking use very different muscles. Instead of looking at marathon training, maybe it would help to look at ironman triathalon training instead. That might better help you to do both easier. Whatever you decide- good luck! We are capable of much more than we think we are (although our body will tell us when we do cross that line!)

invest in lots of biofreeze! that stuff is great.

hehe....that stuff is ok for muscles. doesn't seem to do squat for anything under the surface.

btw...i told my wife. she said "what? seriously? i don't know. you couldn't hardly run 5 miles the other day with me."

Sure you can - you should actually keep the biking up while you train. You don't want to run exclusively - you need other aerobic activities to throw in there once or twice a week, and swimming or biking are both great alternatives. I biked at least once a week as part of my training & it helps a great deal. I'd say keep close to your biking schedule & tie it into your marathon training wherever it calls for cross training.

Throw in some short distance speed work to get your time down a little - I've got a great workout for that, if you have a treadmill handy. LMK if you want it.

Good luck! I doubt if I could run 2 miles right now. Then again, I hate running. It bores the hell out of me. I have a good buddy who finished Iron Man New Zealand last year. Badass. Anyway, good luck, train well, and be careful with your knees, etc!

i ran for 15-20 minutes tonight and rode the stationary bike for 30 minutes. at the pace i was riding it will take me almost 6 hours to run it. i really need to improve my speed. ihad sent me a pm with some excercise to work on that.

Put bandaids on your nipples to prevent chafing.

Or run shirtless and show off that farmer tan. :)

Also, you're probably gonna want to slab some Vaseline on your feet to cut down the blistering and such. It's a possibility that one or more toenails might come off completely, even with the Vaseline.

our use diaper rash powder, that works without having to pull out chest hairs.

My father used to drink raw eggs every morning till he unknowingly got a rotten one. He never did it again. :heh:
As for how to prepare for the marathon... make sure you know the course well, that way when you tell the cab driver where to wait for you there wont be any confusion. Then go somewhere for coffee and have the cabbie drop you off a couple of blocks from the finish line...no prob :heh:

http://www.halhigdon.com/spring/Springnovice.htm

prolly follow this marathon training guide
http://www.halhigdon.com/marathon/Mar00novice.htm

and fwiw...it couldn't come at a better time. the weather has been so crappy that i haven't able to muster the energy to do anything outside. and it's not cold enough to do any winter actitities either.

Good Luck on your training! I'm getting started also, I think I'm going to try next year's LA Marathon... but there is a 1/2 marathon in Long Beach that is my current goal.
