For vehicles sold in 2004, parent company of Mercedes-Benz and Chrysler paid most in CAFE fines.
NEW YORK (CNNMoney.com) - DaimlerChrysler paid the most in fines last year for violating Corporate Average Fuel Economy regulations for vehicles the company sold in 2004. The fines were assessed over the course of 2005.
DaimlerChrysler makes Mercedes-Benz, Chrysler, Dodge and Jeep vehicles. The company paid $8.5 million in fines to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, which administers the CAFE program.
BMW paid the most overall last year, but it paid fines for vehicles sold in the years 2001 and 2003. In 2005, BMW paid a total of $12 million for exceeding CAFE standards for vehicles it sold in 2001 and 2003. BMW has not paid any fines, at least yet, for running afoul of fuel economy standards in 2004.
Fines are based on the total number of vehicles manufactured or imported and the amount by which those vehicles underperform set fuel economy standards.
The standard for cars is an average of 27.5 miles per gallon. For light trucks, including SUVs and minivans, it's 21.6 mpg.
The fines are collected by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, which administers the CAFE program.
Last year, Porsche paid a total of $6.4 million in fines. Half the fines stemmed from sales of the company's Cayenne SUV.
Volkswagen paid $3.5 million in fines last year and Italian exotic car maker Ferrari paid $1.5 million.

Really makes you wonder how much "actual material" and "labor" are actually associated with each car... (Notwithstanding the initial development and design costs for totally new platform designs)
Besides... they more than make up for it on parts and repairs (which is where the BIG money is on a car. :hmm: )

$8 million bucks is really peanuts to a big auto company.

yeah, but you think that it's simply the Big SUV that's causing them to pay 6 of that 8 mil.
you have to factor that cost into that single model, not through the rest of them. then they think of how much it costs to make/market, etc etc. i dunno. seems like a decent chunk of change for a single model of their whole brand.

texans in general piss me off. my friend works in a huge petrolium (sp?) refinery, and as a worker there, after 2 years of work, the company buys her a freaking ford f-150 just for her! ARE YOU KIDDING ME?!?! FORD F-1freaking50? yeah...lets get her a truck to consume a pleathora of gas!!! SCREW THEM!!! SCREW PEOPLE WITH HUMMERS!! SCREW PEOPLE WITH TRUCKS WHO DON'T USE THEM AS TRUCKS. AND SCREW OUR PRESIDENT BECAUSE HE "NEEDS" A F**KIN GOLD TOILET SEAT! I can't justify buying anything without distinct functionabilty while my fellow brother and sister are trying to find their NEXT F**KING MEAL!!! sorry for turning this into something political. But when a company says hey, lets pay some trivial fines and screw up our environment just to our customers will be "HAPPY" very much disgust me!
lets keep it green people!
note: I'm not attacking you DF...just went on my little rant again. keep it pimp style! :)

Yes, but when they burn all that gasoline they are using everybody's air. That belongs to all of us and they are using more than their fair share.

This was discussed in a previous thread. First of all, we don't have an energy policy in this country indicating what a "fair share" is.
Secondly, a person in the inner city or a small town who commutes 5 minutes to work, to shop, etc. may use less fuel in a year driving a 15 MPG SUV than a person who spends 2 hours per day doing the same tasks but gets 30 MPG.
I own a car which gets approx. 24 MPG which I use as my daily driver. I also have an old restored pickup which gets 15 MPG but only does 1000 miles per year. Should I get rid of my pickup because my "fair share" is not allocated to me?

fair share is subjective I will agree with you on that. BUT equate fair share with friggin soccer moms (and dads) driving their friggin SUV's EVERYWHERE (not even off road) while they can drive a fuel efficent car for that 5 mintues. but NOOOOOOOOO, gosh darn...they need their big honkin SUV/HUMMER to drive them 5 minutes. Like I said before, we don't need a gold toilet seat, it's not practical.
