Streaming movies from a FTP server

I have a FTP server and its password protected. Can I stream the movies from that server?? I tried that using Windows media player and it does not work.. I also tried using VLC media player but no luck.. So what's the easy way to stream movies and stuff?? I also did try orb but there was a problem in divx files..

You should be able to stream using a simple http server too.
