this just happen today . ( OK we all have one in the family -not the brightest light bulb )
my brother in-law stops in to the dodge dealer by his home on his way home from work to look at new trucks . the salesman get a hold of him and about sold / lease him a new 2006 dodge ram 150 4x4 4 door , 5 speed auto ,v8 ,am/FM CD , 6 ft bed .
has a sticker price of 30 plus thousand . anyway he tell the salesman he has his car for a trade a 5 year old ford windstar fwd.
the salesman works it all out . he to turn in his windstar.
my brother in-law calls his insurances company finds that his payments will go from $60 a month to $110 a month .thats fine and dandy !
the salesman tells him with his ford windstar as trade and $3500 down he can lease the new dodge ram 150 for 27 months at payments of $278
we'll then my brother in-law calls me and decides to change the deal a bit .he offers them his ford escort .(dealers not seen this piece of junk )
then the dealer tell my brother in law never mind we don't need a trade in !
my brother in law calls me back again .
and saids he be by to take for a ride and to the dealer
.i say fine i want to stop him he cant afford a new car he trying to sell his home because he can't make the payments .right now he is bringing home like 1-2 hundred more then his bills less food
so how the hell would he make those car payments .

anyway all said and done i talk him out of buying the truck .
then he tells me the salesman and the sales manager .had made him a special deal were they got him a employee discount and he was to give them $500 cash on top of the down payment to seal this deal !
and what other specials they set up for him was a free oil change every 3 months or 3000 mile and inspection .for the nice price of only $8 a month rolled into the payment .
and he still had to pay for plates and title !
I'm not sure what else was done in this deal but it all seem rotten to me .

i forgot IT WAS THE LAST DAY TO GET THIS GREAT DEAL !!!!!!!
I'm just glad i got him out of sign the paper work

When I went to go by my new truck (I didn't) I hassled with three dealers. 2 of them were the suxor. 1 was great, but the truck just wasn't the same anymore.

:stupid: Try taking a breath while you're writing. Reminds me of my young cousins who get all excited and try to tell me a long story in one breath.

It's hard to tell, even with a re-read, if he bought the truck or not. If he didn't, he surely has you to thank.

I haven't bought a new car from anyone but the Fleet department for at least a dozen years. I get killer pricing and none of the stupid dealer tricks. I always verify pricing through the Internet and at least one dealer visit. We save thousands. Costco has a pretty good referral program too. They direct their members to Fleet or Internet Sales teams. No "sharks" to fight off on the lot that way.

Keystone Ford in Norwalk (CA) has an awesome Fleet Manager in Gary Kirkpatrick. We've bought an SHO Taurus, two Mustangs, two Explorers, and two F-150's through him.

Merlin knows my 'skill' with car dealers. I enjoy screwing with them, honestly. I learned that little skill from my Dad; I have seen him rake car salesmen over the coals before and it has been quite funny.

Mrs. Kevster and I have gone around looking at cars in the last few years and we know most of the little psychological 'tricks' they try to hook you in. The best thing to do is just stand your ground, don't give an inch and if you have to just walk away. The last new car I bought I had all the paperwork on what actual dealer invoice was and we started from there. I wasn't doing a trade-in and I had my own financing so they lost on their other spiffs that way. I ended up getting the car for $300 over invoice, which was all right. The salesman I bought it from was just starting out so the real negotiations were between me and the sales manager.

Oh, I have posted this here before, but in threads like this it's always prudent to link to this very informative Edmunds.com article:

"Special deal, this day only"... it's just bait.
If they want to sell the car they will offer the same deal. If they think they can get you up higher they will. The only thing that might change is after the end of the year they lose some motivation to discount. Unless it is December 31st and they say today only, they don't mean it.

Any one who buys a car without visiting www.edmunds.com first deserves to get ripped off.
