Big Hit of the Holidays: 14 Million IPods Sold
Sales Well Above Analysts' Predictions

The numbers are in: The iPod phenomenon got even bigger over the holidays.

Apple Computer Inc. sold 14 million of the music players in the last quarter of 2005, chief executive Steve Jobs said yesterday.

The iPod sales numbers beat the expectations of industry analysts. "They surprised all of us," said Tim Bajarin, president of tech consulting and research company Creative Strategies Inc. Bajarin's company had predicted Apple would sell 12.5 million iPods in the fourth quarter.

The iPod's popularity helped account for Apple's $5.7 billion in sales for those three months -- $1 billion of which occurred in the company's chain of 135 retail stores. Jobs also said the iTunes Music Store has now sold 850 million copies of songs and has 83 percent of the online music sales market.

...and to think I actually played a role in this. :)

Now to find some cool accessories for my Nano (such as that FM radio / remote thingy).

Same here, bought an Ipod for girlfriend. She almost **** herself.

Amazing how Apple looked like it would pretty much DIE, then find itself comming back due to their notebooks and the Almighty IPod.

I think schools have really saved their butts too. It's rare to see a school without macs.

Schools are what saved Apple from going under for the five years before the iPod was rolled out. Their strong presence in education institutes & the sales that went along with them kept Apple just floating enough to keep the company going.

i was in a bally's yesterday, and it seemed 3 out of every 4 people had an iPod. It was funny to see people running with a big clunky discman.

As a side note, apple releases the financials tonight. Intel didnt do so hot yesterday, but apple is expected to do pretty well based on what jobs announced last week.

oh, and one more thing....

Interesting about schools saving Apple via the MAC, yet schools are having a devil of atime with kids using iPods. Most schools are banning the iPod, even confiscating them because kids are using them to tune out of their classes. Kids have found ways to hide the earbuds in their long hair, with wires running inside clothes, etc.

I'm happy to know Apple is doing well, and hope they get more visability to their PC's and Operating Systems now, as they've always made some wonderful products

I'd love to see them offer their OS separate from the hardware... they have a great OS, but I'm sure as heck not going to shell out the $$$ for a Mac since I have perfectly good PCs sitting around.

I'd spend money on the OS, tho, if I could load it onto my PC.

I'll be more than happy to shell out the money for a Mac as soon as I know I can dual boot.

I actually don't think that the "apple premium" is all that bad anymore, if you configure similar systems.
