I'm having a bad day today. First, we discovered that one of my tanks went to hell overnight. Apparently a filter was blocked which meant no circulation. (Its a nano) A relatively expensive fish that I was about to sell died as a result. I ended up spending my day ripping the tank apart, had to put the 1 other fish into another tank which I am surpirsed survived. Of course, the fish died over night and since the tank was so small, it was stinking to high heaven.

To make it even more fun, I was supposed to do waterchanges on 2 other tanks as they were a bit low...after I took the water out to refill the nano, it was even more of a PIA.

Yep, wondeful way to spend the day.

I love watching fish in tanks-but I think that If I had to be responsible for them I'd blow my brains out..sorry about your bad day..and your dead fish. I hope you get it all fixed.

I work in a pet store, when I first started there I was trained on how to maintain the huge system we have.... it's a pain. The little ones are most likely easier. I hate it when we lose fish... so I feel your pain ufcrusher. I feel your pain :(

Actually larger systems are MUCH MUCH easier. Think of dropping a stone in a pond....if its a small pond, your stone might create waves across the ENTIRE thing. If its a large pond/lake, you might make ripples for a few yards, but not the entire thing...it would take a MUCH larger rock to do the same thing.

Or if you want, think of passing gas in a car vs. passing gas in an auditorium, in the car, you are stuck breathing it in, smelling your buddies aroma no matter what you do....its roll down the windows, crank up the A/C and pray for you not to pass out. Now if he lets one fly while you are watching Brokeback mountain (obviously you two are closer than we think)...the smell has places to go...and so do you.

Or, to finish my roll, peeing in the bathtub vs. the pool vs. the ocean...simple enough example right.

It also doesnt help that "I" havent lost a fish in a VERY long time. There have been 2 deaths in my system....1 was while someone was watching my tanks when I was away and it became lunch....the 2nd time was a fish from the store that was sick and they gave me a refund as it wasnt due to me.

I used to work in a fish store (when I was a college freshman... summer job), however you have to realize that in that environment, turnover is quite high... so fish come in, fish go out... Any "floaters" are promptly disposed of (or should be... to keep customers from going... "EWWWWW .... DEAD FISH!!!" :D )

But yeah.. for the amount of maintenance in a store... the smaller tanks are "quicker" to take care of... but UF is right, for the "long term keeping of fish" a larger tank is a more stable environment and is easier to maintain over the long haul (simply because there is more water and it takes more time for changes such as temperature fluxuations, ph, chemical reactions, etc... ).

Sorry to hear about the fish UF... I guess expensive losses like that is why I've never ventured into the saltwater realm.

Sorry about your problems with your tank...
I don't do much with my 59gal anymore, I think I'm gonna sell it and leave fish alone for awhile...my heart's just not in it anymore with aquariums.
