I think just the fan died and it has overheated, but is there anything besides obvious burning I need to look for on the motherboard before I replace it so I don't fry the new one immediately? I don't see anything actually melted, but got that burning electrical smell, and when I reached in to pull the card out I got nice red marks on my fingers where I touched it was so hot. Thanks for any input!

Usually the cards try to pull as much juice as the mobo will give them, and the AGP slot is the weak link. I'm assuming you have the model with the little cyllindrical capacitors at the end of the 9800 near the power adapter? Check those. If one is bulging or burned, that's where your card went poop.
BTW: what model is your mobo?

That's the card. I can't see any damage, but it smelled like it was melting and my fingers are actually burned where I grabbed the dang thing, so it was about to fry it would seem. The new card is in and everything seems to be good again. Thanks
Sorry just so the mobo question. Not sure, and I didn't look close. The computer is a Dell Dimension 8400 2.8ghz if that helps. As I recall when I was buying the rep couldn't tell me what the motherboard was, which kind of surprised me.

I own half a dozen dells (old and new). Their boards are manufactured by intel and they are usually very good.
