An anonymous Swiss businessman has bought the gadget-packed silver Aston Martin DB5 coupe that featured in such classic James Bond movies as ‘Goldfinger’ and ‘Thunderball’ for 1.9 million dollars (approx £1.1 million).
Auction officials had predicted that the piece of cinematic history would fetch between $1.5 and $2.5 million.
Bond himself would approve of the mystery surrounding the winning bidder’s identity, as although this was the first time he had bid in an auction, the 45-year old man already has an impressive collection of around a dozen vehicles, including classic Aston Martins and Porsches.
The mystery buyer used his friend and car dealer Beat Roos to place the bids via telephone. Upon winning the auction, Roos said that the instructions he had been given were to ‘bring the car back to Switzerland’.
It wasn’t the only classic car to go under the hammer, with gangster Al Capone’s 1928 Cadillac sedan reaching an impressive $565,000 (approx £317,500)
The auction was presented by Canada’s RM auctions and is one of 5 held in Phoenix, USA by different companies throughout January. More than $100 million is expected to be spent on vehicles of all makes and sizes.
