Baby Found in Bag Alive, Floating on Lake in Brazil
Sunday, January 29, 2006

SAO PAULO, Brazil — A baby girl found inside a plastic bag floating on a lake in Brazil was released from hospital Sunday in good condition, doctors said.

The girl, apparently two months old, was rescued Saturday afternoon by a couple who heard her crying in the Pampulha Lagoon in Belo Horizonte, a city about 300 miles northeast of Sao Paulo.

Amateur footage broadcast on Brazilian TV showed rescuers using a long tree branch to pull the black plastic bag out of the water. They opened the bag and found the girl inside, dressed in a pink dress.

"I heard what sounded like a cat," Jose da Cruz told Globo TV. "Then the noise was increasing and it caught my attention."

A small wooden board inside the bag apparently kept it from sinnking.

"She is in good condition," Dr. Claudia Guimaraes said. "It's a miracle she survived the heat and somehow didn't drown."

Authorities arrested the mother of the baby later Sunday, but she denied throwing the girl into the lake, Globo reported. The mother said she gave the baby away to a group of homeless people because she didn't have enough money to raise the child.

Amazing story. I'm glad the baby is alive & well!

Question. Why not leave the baby near a hospital or something? Why give it to a group of HOMELESS people? omg.

Nobody EVER drops off babies at hospitals. Well..that's not true...but it does seem strange at how many cases of people who try to throw their babies away instead of just dropping them off and walking away. I really have no clue why they would choose the former over a "no questions asked" free ticket to getting rid of your baby if you just take it to a hostpital.

the man lies.

it's supposed to be no questions asked, but that's not what happens. you get tracked down. a file folder is made with your name on it. etc.

and that's just in this country... this woman was in brazil. yeah, they have skyscrapers; they also have good old-fashioned shantytown poverty. who knows what her deal was... crazy... maybe couldn't make it to a hospital because of distance/health/lack of transportation/warrant for her arrest/scared of being abused by the police/"social workers" / etc...

brazil ain't a fun place to live if you're not rich.

i must say, handing the baby to a group of homeless people, if that is in fact what happened, is one MIGHTY strange solution to the "i can't be a mother" problem :hmm:

What would possibly make this woman think homeless ppl could afford a baby any more than she could. I think she made that up so the "ppl" could never be found so she couldnt be blamed. She probably thought the baby would sink and never be found and that was the first thing she could think of. Its sad to think ppl could ever be that desperate to have to resort to stuff like that but I bet it happens ALOT more than we know. The others just sank.
