Dell to Hire 5,000 People in India.
Computer maker Dell Inc. (DELL) said Monday it planned to add 5,000 jobs in India over the next two years, bringing its work force in the country to 15,000.
Dell is also looking to set up a manufacturing center in India, a move that could help boost the sale of Dell computers here, President and CEO Kevin Rollins told reporters after a meeting with Indian Prime Minister Manmohan Singh.
The Round Rock, Texas-based company will hire 700 to 1,000 workers for a new call center in Gurgaon, a satellite town of the capital, New Delhi, Rollins said. The new call center, the company's fourth in India, will open in April, he said.
The other new hires will staff call centers in the cities of Bangalore and Hyderabad in southern India and Mohali in the northern state of Punjab. Also this year, the company plans to double the staff at its product testing center in Bangalore, which currently employs 300 engineers, Rollins said.

The day of the Tsunami all the phones got routed to Round Rock. All of them. Can you imagine the day after Christmas? All those people with their computers and new problems and all those phone calls being routed to Round Rock.

I don't like that either. It's like being lied to. Not a good first impression.

The only language spoken throughout India is English. Sure, it is heavily accented, but it's still he language they use to comunicate.
To put things in perspective, remember that some people from the deep south are still difficult to understand. It's just that we are not used to hearing the accents. As technology and broadcast become more prevalent in India, the accent will fade.
The last three people I spoke to on Dell tech support had very understandable English. Sure, they still read inane scripts, but they got the job done. I would prefer that Americans had the jobs, but the Indians do it well.

That's because they know that if they use their real names, they'll probably get racist remarks. They use American names to make Americans feel better.

Here's the hot tip, when prompt asks you what language you speak, choose spanish. Then when a rep answers in Spanish, just so "Oh man, sorry I guess I chose the wrong option, but can you help me anyway?" At least that way you get someone who *should* be an american that can communicate in English.

uh, americans give fake names too. Most call centers reccommend you give a fake name, as a personal safety issue.

He meant that the only language that can get you around all over india is English. Even Hindi is not spoken throughout the country.

Sorry, but the Indians I work with say that this is the case. Many Indians have to communicate to each other in English because they don't speak the same Indian languages. Hindi is not universal.
And, yes, they do complain about the accents of the Indians of different areas. Apparently Indians from "other" provences have terrible accents.
