I want to buy my girlfriend a laptop computer for her birthday, and I'm looking for the best deal for $750-1,000. Looking for minimum specs of 512MB memory, 60GB hard drive, internal b/g wireless, and a cd burner and dvd player (a dvd burner is nice but definitely not necessary. Important considerations are a high quality/clear screen, battery life, and portability, although I know she doesn't want something as small as my Inspiron 700m.
Recommendations? I've been Dell-loyal for years and have bought 3 computers from them, but Im wondering if better deals exist for my needs.
Thanks.

I'm typing this on a Dell laptop right now. Inspiron 6000. Widescreen, 1.5ghz, 528Mb RAM, built-in wireless B/G. I've been pretty pleased with it. Cost right at about $1000.
I've always been pleased w/ Dell laptops. Also had good experience w/ Toshiba. My mother-in-law is using a Toshiba that is pushing 6 years old. A few months ago, I replaced the battery and the keyboard, but other than that its still going strong also.

Dell is definitely my first option, but I've pretty much never bought anything else, so I'm curious as to if I'm missing a great deal/product.

I'd pretty much agree with Dell or Toshiba.

:stupid:
Dell Inspiron 6000 is the best choice for $1000 & under.
Check the refurb site - I got a 6000 from there for $425 last April.

Probably looking to avoid the refurb option, since it's a gift. If it were for me, I would probably go that route.
Thanks to everyone for answering, I've been a Dell man for years and it looks like I'll continue to be, just wanted to make sure I was blindly ignoring nay better deals out there.

I do, I'll check them out. I've also heard that they're amazing on returns, they take pretty much anything no questions asked.
