I really like those, and I need to buy one in the next 2-3 months. Has anyone heard if we'll be getting anything on those anytime soon, even a 10% off coupon?

I'd recommend that you avoid the XPS line altogether. You can get the same specs in another machine for less - I don't think they ever offer any decent discounts on the XPS.

I upgraded one of the M140's to the specs I liked, and got a price of $1,117, which is commiserate if not better than any other I could find, even the Inspiron 6000.

Yeah, the 140's not too bad - it's the 170 that they really shake you down for.

If you were thinking of getting a 3 or 4 year warranty on it, you can probably get an additional discount through the Dell EPP program - http://www.dell.com/epp

Interesting..thanks for the info. I agree that the M170 seems to be all flash for the cash.

Dell 9300 is similiar to the XPS.. Couple of differences are the Gigabit ethernet, Lights and the way it looks...

Dell 9300 and the XPS have a very similiar motherboard. You can upgrade the video card of the Dell 9300 to 7800GTX for around $250

I got my Dell 9300 a month ago and for $875 plus Tax
I got Intel Pentium M 1.73ghz
512mb DDR2 ram (Upgraded to Corsair 2gig for $130 more)
60gb 7200RPM HD
Geforce 6800 256mb video card
Sony DVD/CDRW (Upgraded to Pioneer Slot loading dvd burner DVR-k05- $87)
17' Truelife screen (1920 x 1200)
1yr warranty but I will upgrade to 3yrs at the end of the year
Wifi B/G
Free Dell 924 printer
Free Dell 9300 bag

Interesting....you got a machine with pretty much the exact specs I want (except I'd upgrade to 1GB RAM) for a damn good price. I'll have to tinker with the 9300 customizer a little bit...do you mind me asking which coupon you used?

I can't seem to get to the price you got, because I went to 1 GB and got the 9 cell battery (portability is very crucial).

I bought mine a month ago... Also DO not upgrade stuff thru dell, they really rip you off.. Just buy the stuff and upgrade it yourself.

If you buy through EPP, i have some coupons

10% off XPS system DRM71GB083WSC1
30% off Dell Dimension System J63RBC5CFV1K2T
30% off Dell Inspiron noteook MJ219DFJ440

Plus the 12% discount..

The coupon expires today..

Thanks for the help...I may end up doing the sucker move and upgrading through Dell, simply because I'm not as savvy as I should be on this kind of stuff and wouldn't know where to start. Dell basically counts on people like me :)

Damn, your EPP gets the XPS down to $1,038, with 1GB ram, 60mb hard drive, 9 cell lithium battery, etc. Pretty damn nice...

Not anymore -- from what I've read on notebookforums lately, Dell has caught on to those who were buying the 7800GTX card for $250, when it really should have been $599.

I have the XPS Gen. 2 (with the 6800 Ultra) and really like it. Other manufacturers offering the same card charge far more for their laptops (Alienware, Voodoo, etc.) -- there's no other mainstream manufacturer offering the 6800 Ultra or the 7800GTX in their notebooks AFAIK.
